Well, actually Led Zeppelin have quite some experimental stuff, well at least as experimental as Pink Floyd ...

I like the bands you mentioned as well and recently started to like System of a Down, Oceansize, Enter Shikari - maybe worth a listen?
Tweaker's Paradise - Player's nightmare.

forgot to say that i'm trying to get out of metal and explore my musical horizons, posibley forever judgeing by the amount i'm enjoying the musi i'm listening to at the moment.

i already like SOAD and led zep, wouldn't count either of them as experimentle.

Everything Deadstar just mentioned is well worth a listen :)
One of my current personal faves, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are also very good.

Also try:
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Kings Of Leon
Blur (recent albums - 13 / Think Tank)
Nine Inch Nails (OK, a bit metally ...)
The Cure (avoid best ofs though, Boys Don't Cry a good place to start)
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
AV Warpig set; PK Bridge; Blackguard Flat 50 set

Because I'm old and was unable to copw with prog rock ;)

If you want to head off the beaten track and get a change from the ordinary chords & 4/4 try the following

Firstly Freakzone on BBC Radio 6 is useful when you need something a little different http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/freakzone/

Early Talking Heads (pre 1983)
XTC up to and including English Settlement
Air (no guitar but a different vibe)
British Sea Power
Captain Beefheart (can be a little painful though)
Jah Wobble (adventures in Dub & Eastern influences)
Can
Some Todd Rungren
Japan (the early stuff)
Soft Machine (the album Bundles has Allan Holdsworth playing)
Kingston Wall

Rob...

Oh Yeah ! Tool are always an idea

Katatonia, they've changed their sound quite a lot through the years- their earlier stuff was pretty doom, but later they sound not too dissimilar to Porcupine Tree :)

Check out Liquid Tension Experiment too.
Nailbomb, VHII, Warpig 7, MQ, Black Dog, 10th Anniversary
