Just got the new Machinehead album on a whim - always liked the odd tune I've heard by them.  This album totally rules, gonna have to check out their back catalog - any tips on their best stuff?

I haven't heard the new album so i don't know if its closer to their older or newer stuff but i can give you a break down or their releases.

Burn my Eyes and The More Things Change

Arguably Machine Heads best work and my favourites aswell, all around heavier than their newer stuff.

The Burning Red and Supercharger

Basically Rap metal, alot of MH fans dislike these albums but i really like them, yeah it's not MH but it's still pretty cool.

Through the Ashes of Empires

A cross between Supercharger and Burn My Eyes, apparently they're return to the old days but it really wasn't, still a great album.

i think their new album sucks.

hhahahahaha just kidding, it's one of my favourite albums!!!!!! it is very heavy, and cool and melodic in places, but i love how it centres around brutality!

I hate Machineheads older work. HOWEVER, the new stuff sounds pretty good and more thrashy than the older cr@p, i might have to get this one as it seems more to my tastes than previous work.
Black Dogs

Previous BKP's: Riff Raff, Holy Divers, Painkillers, C. Warpig, Nailbomb, Miracle Man.

I saw them at the infamous '97 Astoria show when the PA packed up in the first song.  Absolutely awesome performance once they got it fixed.

"Burn My Eyes" is a must-own metal classic

Using the Korn producer for "burning red" was a mistake as it made them sound like a cheap Korn knock-off, but even that album sounded good next to "supercharger".... :(

I ordered The Blackening today...

i think that is just being a bit too narrow minded...... i don't mind clean singing at all........ his clean voice is just a standard clean voice to me.

anyone know what amps they used on the blackening??? i love their sound!

Well, the blackening is a bit of a mix of many stages that they've been through. Its their most mature album musically by a long way and has the heaviness of the old stuff and expands on the melodic middle era stuff, but in a way thats not shitee.

Burn my eyes: no nonesense, young sounding but very good, heavy heavy metal. MUST HAVE

The more things change: OK, but nothing special. You wont find much like the blackening on it: there are few melodies, some solos, but not many. It maintly tries to be as heavy and aggressive as possible.

The burning red: nu-metally, some rapping, some much more melodic songs. Apparently they were under pressure to jump on the nu metal scene. You can hear some of this in the blackening (melodic riffs and clean vocals carried over), and its worth a listen, but its a very different album to the previous 2. Its not a bad album, I think. Some good songs. But this dissapointed us that were fans from the start.

Supercharger: Supergay. Only buy/DL this if you want to see how far they fell, and why they lost their record contract and why I'm so chuffed that they've risen so high again.

Through the ashes of empires: a return to form. Probably the most similar to the blackening, but not as good IMO. The songs arent as well structured or as musically intersting. If you got into them by the blackening then I reckon this should be second on your list.

Hope that helps (tis just what I think though).

seems like I need to buy their first couple of albums.  I know what WFD means about 'sung' vocals in metal, I'm not a big fan of that style for the most part, BUT, the way it's done on the new MH album just works.  the riff on the first track just begs you to turn it up LOUD!!!

Unfortunately for Machine Head, I think they peaked musically about 2 minutes into album number 1, track number 1, just after Robb Flynn goes "let freedom ring with a shotgun blast!".  They never seemed to know where they were going after the first album.

So do you think Ronnie James Dio sounds gay?  And Rob Halford?

Wait.  Scratch that last comment.   :?

The new album is mental
Looking on the DVD they use a 5150 "that tone is $%&#ing sick" into 4 x 12 1960b non angled marshall cabs.
Theres a rack with a pod and a few other things but i think its mostly the 5150.

Goin to see em in Glasgow in June with Lamb of God and Drowning Pool. Cannot wait!!

Although i found some heavy metalvocals pretty gay, its not the case with dio, but i don´t like his vocals.the same with rob halford.
They are good, but, since i don´t dig that kind of vocals,i dont like it
and i think you misunderstood me, or I  screwed up my english sentence eheheh Sorry
i said, New Metal/Metalcore/Emocore CLEAN vocals Are gay and i can´t stand it.

Your English is fine, JP!!   I was just kidding with you.

I don't like the clean vocal parts in new Metal stuff either, because most of them can't actually sing.  But then I don't like the dirty vocal parts either.

But ignore me, I'm an old man.  I can't really get into anything that's been released in the last 10 years.
