So apart from a potential f**k up with buying secondhand VHII's - friday 13th - nice one... I do have something positive to report on.

I just got a second chance offer through ebay on an auction I missed out on (I was truly pissed off). However, it seems Lady Luck has smiled at me and I have agreed to purchase this lovely thing as my new project.

I haven't played it yet and providing we bond and its not a complete piece of shite, I plan to strip it to back and replace pretty much most of the components / hardware and of course install new BKPs.

This is going to be my metal guitar and I strive to acheive some pretty heavy tones.

I want to be able to acheive Zakk Wylde type sounds (esp the huge pinched harmonics), and also early Metallica rythm sounds (Kill Em All).

All this and I'd like it to have a really nice a warm organic tone too. The body of this puppy is korina with a mahogany neck and I presume a rosewood fretboard.

Any BKP suggestions? :)

Not sure the Miracle Man will do "warm and organic", maybe a Nailbomb? How about a Cold Sweat? It's ceramic but more vintagey than the MM, but I haven't heard of anyone using one in a V or Explorer.
And I almost forgot, a Holy Diver may also be in the running.

+1 on the Nailbomb. It's not naturally a terribly compressed pickup, but for me, putting the treble up a bit makes it manage the Vintage 'tallica tones really well.

another vote for the Nailbomb - I've got one in my Explorer and it's fantastic. you can throw all the gain in the world at it but still get a clear tone. I'm not a fan of ceramic pickups at all (personal taste), so I'd defo vote for the NB bearing in mind what you want to use it for.

I also recommend the nailbomb, I have one in my sg and it sounds very organic, it is also very versatile, and can handle huge amounts of distortion. You can get very close to the vintage metallica sound with it.

I have VH2s in my Korina V but then again I'm not going for a Hetfield vibe

A cold Sweat would work well, as would a painkiller and I feel that a Miracle Man would be good in a V (would be interesting to see what a Neck position MM would be like at the bridge as it is the same winding spec but with an Alnico 5 magnet

I see that you are in South London - you'd be welcome to try some of our stuff out if it suits you - or pop along to the LGS in two weeks

I hope that the second chance offer is a legit one - Ebay had a spate of spoof scams with second chance offers - make sure that the 2nd chance message appears in "my messages" in your ebay account.

after you mentioning metal axe.. MM set, or a custom warpig in the bridge and some neck.

korina sounds brighter than mahogany, so i'd go with holy diver...

'Early metallica and zakk wylde' just screams miracle man.

But its not warm or organic, by BK standards.

That would be nailbombs and warpigs: the powerfull A5 stuff.

I went with a Cold Sweat set in mine but that was largely governed by the mahogany body. In your case I'd think that probably a Holy Diver or maybe a Painkiller might do the trick. I just don't see a MM as organic enough in your guitar but in fairness I think I have a mental block with a MM as personally I don't find it organic enough even in a big slab of mahogany.

I am leaning towards the Nailbomb here, as this was my initial impression. Not sure whether it will work well with the Korina.

Close second and third is Cold Sweat & Holy Diver - I guess I'll have to try them.

thanks WFD will do.

the flying v arrived yesterday. It was used by a 12 year old girl previously (very sparingly) and her dad sold it to me over ebay. Its in great nick, the strings look and feel ancient (ouch), but it plays well.

Plugged into my amp the stock epi pickups sound shrill, thin and timid.

Can't even be compared to my Les Paul which sounds like a big bully.

However, the rest of the guitar is definately deserving of an electronics overhaul and new BKPs.

Presently my mind is wrestling with Nailbombs, Miraclemen & Warpig(THAT gold cover is very nice).

Holy shite.

I've just spend a whole afternoon listening to clips of BKPs.

"I think" a Miracle Man set is what i'm looking for, especially given Tim's clip which is spot on Zakk Wylde lead tone.

I see what people mean about not being warm or organic, but I may have to compromise on this one... :twisted: \m/ :twisted:

Slightly off the subject there was one clip which really stood out for me -the Riff Raff set in the SG was pure Angus tone...
