Riff Raffs - variety of clips!
« on: April 21, 2007, 08:52:46 PM »
Apologies for the very rushed, sloppy and generally dodgy(!) playing, but I thought I'd share my first attempt at home recording with my new setup:

Riff Raff'd SG -> Marshall Guv'nor -> modded Valve Junior

Recorded via:

Sony mic -> Sony recording cassette Walkman -> Creative Zen Nano Plus

First clip is a bit of 'DC via the bridge pickup:

Second is some Jimi using bother picups for the intro and 'verse', neck for the solo and bridge for the outro:

Cheers Joe.  The tone's really sharp and not warm enough.  It was a very hurried attempt just to try it out, so I can now start playing with it a bit.  The settings on the Guv'nor want adjusting - more mids and bass, plus a bit less treble and I need to play with mic placement.  The clarity of the Riff Raffs comes across well though I think.

I'm really impressed with how it's come out given the gear I'm using.  It's never going to sound as good as Hunter's clips, but as a raw warts n' all production I think it's OK?

Nice!
We neeeeeed more DC clips in here ... I really like your playing style, sounds like you're enjoying yourself! And tone-wise, as a fellow SG player, its nice to hear that level of brightness out of an SG.

Yeah with a bit of tweaking you should be able to find a killer tone and it will be sounding awesome.
But the characteristics of the Riff Raff are definatley shown in these clips. :D

I can do plenty of 'DC mate!

I was trying to show some of the flexibility of the Riff Raffs with the bluesy stuff and high gain stuff.  They can do so much more than Angus.  They might be the first Riff Raff neck clips put up here actually!

The blues and Maiden stuff was cool ... I'm actually interested in some non-DC Riff Raff clips as I am thinkink of getting a bridge one myself, and would not want to be left with only the Angus sound (although I can think of worse fates ....). I await with further clips with baited breath!

its not the tone thats bad, its the fact that you're recording into a walkman. i'd think you'd get a better recording putting that mic straight into your computer and using a free recording program.

Can't do that matey - my computer doesn't like recording through the sound card for some reason.  It just crackles.  I don't think the Walkman's that bad to be honest - it's a top notch "Professional" spec one.
