well if keeping soundcard try using asio4all( http://www.asio4all.com/) to set up asio drivers.....ahh aduacity doesn't use asio (would maybe spend £50 and get something like a maudio 2496 card...cheap and easy to use

Can't do that matey - my computer doesn't like recording through the sound card for some reason.  It just crackles.  I don't think the Walkman's that bad to be honest - it's a top notch "Professional" spec one.

you sure you're doing it right? i used a 5 dollar computer mic into a 1997 laptop with windows 98 with audacity and it wasn't too bad.

I think it's the soundcard conflicting with something.

I've been tweaking the settings on the Guv'nor and moving the mic a bit and I'm getting a better sound now.  To be honest, it's handier to use the Walkman rather than go straight into the PC.
