Got a new PRS opionion on pickups????
« on: April 22, 2007, 09:39:34 PM »
i have a custom 22 with dragon II pickups, trem and macarty switching.

i have looked on the net but i dont seem to be able to anywhere that gives spec on the pickups eg magnet type, output blah blah.

ive just got to say before i go on that i love the sound with these pickups, they are very versitile, the sound is very clear and defined and not muddy at all i was pleasently surprised. i do have BKP nailbombs in my custom jackson which sound killer.

i just wanted to know due to the fact the PRS is better quality wood than the jackson will nailbombs make it sound any better???

at the moment i feel even with the stock pups in the PRS it sounds better than the nailbomb loaded jackson. mind you most of it due to the sheer quality of the instrument.

Thanks for any opinions, Rob

Cant answer you from here.

Post me your gutars and I'll swap the pickups round and send you an email back with an answer. Guaranteed response within 1 year of receipt of instruments, or you get your guitars back, free of charge!

On the PRS website they describe the Dragon II as an "alnico pickup with McCarty like tones and a little more output", so that's fairly different from the Nailbomb.

Also, unless the Jackson is maple/mahogany with a set neck etc like the PRS, you're comparing apples and oranges.

The PRS might sound great with NBs.  It'll definitely sound different, but not necessarily better.  I know this is the Bare Knuckle forum, but why change the PRS pickups if you love the sound?

From what you've said, I'd leave the PRS alone.  Don't change anything because you think you should, change stuff because you need to or want something else.

Edit:  Phil, we're starting to say the same things as each other on all our posts!

cheers for the replie guys,

basically i just wanted to be told if it isnt broken dont fix it.

i do love the sound already so i shall leave it alone, just wanted someone else to think the same really,

i play every thing from jazz and folk to rock and metal, i try to incorparate differnt aspects of these styles within my playing at any one time, so i need the versitility.

MDV, great offer il have a think about it for a few years and will let you know.  :P

Rob - there was a thread on a here a little while ago that talked about guitars that didn't need BKPs.  A few of us had guitars un-BKP'd that we were happy with exactly as they are, myself included.

You're not alone  ;)

The #6 pickups in my Singlecut Trem sound very good - I won't be swapping them out for anything else.

As for specs, PRS are known for being secretive about their pickup design. I don't think you'll find any detailed info on them.

We even posted that one at exactly the same time!  Twins of Evil.

Great minds think alike, as my Dad always says.  Well, except for your frankly incomprehensible love of skinny necks, Dave!

Hmmm... thinks.... has your wife got a sister?

'Fraid not Phil.  If she did, and if she did I'm sure she'd be too young for you  ;)

" if it's not broken, don't fix it".If you like them don't...I have a custom22 5-way switch and i was not really satisfied with the Dragon2;they don't reproduce the sound i hear when i play unplugged. They lack harmonics and overtones;also,i have to play at 7,5 or 8 on the guitar to have a good sound and cut most treble ,adding more bass than i would want, on the amp.But i think the interaction with the amp is very important.I have a Mesa Nomade 55, it's a difficult amp to operate but it works well with my Squier/EMG sa.I will have new Mules fitted in the Prs tomorrow and i hope for the best...I'll let you know.
