OMG... My new piano teacher!!!
« on: May 06, 2007, 06:01:17 AM »
I start with him next Friday. A few reasons why he'll be AWESOME:

-He's doing his Masters in music at the Newcastle Conservatorium
-He's played as a soloist with the Royal Welsh Symphony Orchestra
-I have friends who go to the same conservatorium who say he's the most amazing pianist they've ever heard
-And on most accounts he's a really cool guy
-He's 6"7' (Not relevant, but hey, it's pretty cool!)

All this and he's only 23 years old!

I seriously can't explain my excitement. It'd by like learning guitar from Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci rolled up into a ball of freak-machine AWESOMENESS!

Wow, I really need to calm down! :P

I don't mean to burst your bubble but being a great player does not mean he'll necessarily be a great teacher. I've had a few guitar teachers now. The teacher I spent the most time with was a decent player but I improved fastest with him. However, I recently wanted to try learning Flamenco guitar and took group lessons with a flamenco teacher who was an absolutely fantastic player but was very unorganized, wasted a lot of time during lesson, jumped from really easy to really hard and back to really easy material all the time. All in all a waste of money for the most part. While the other guy is probably right now not too far above my skill level but I started improving very rapidly starting with the first lesson. Not to mention he taught in a half hour enough material to keep you busy for a week while the other guy had lessons that lasted an hour and a half and only about 45 minutes were really useful.

well anyway, I hope it works out. I'm just trying to say that being taught by a local star won't necessarily give the best results possible.

good luck and enjoy your lessons

Ahh yes, I see your point... but I'm kinda at the stage where (HD'd 8th grade earlier last year) I'm not so much being taught, but rather, being given pointers on the finer points of playing - for example, I play him something, he says what's wrong with it, etc.. That's what I did with my old teacher anyway, but he was a bit of a grump. Sometimes you can learn lots just by talking to/watching guys who really REALLY know what they're doing.

And I spose it's just relieving to finally have a teacher who's a stunning pianist AND a really nice guy, after 3 and a half years of learning from a lady who isn't much good, and a guy who has a pole up his arse.

Sometimes all you need is a great player with a positive attitude to be inspired enough to practise more.

Oh, and he drives in from the conservatorium ( 2 and a half hours away) every Friday to teach in my tiny home town! REALLY exciting, coz there aren't a whole heap of good teachers where I come from.

+1 on the hot blonde woman, i'm rather dissapointed.

Congrats though, my housemate just bought a £900 roland piano for us to use, and to teach me, i've always wanted to play piano but cheap feeling keyboards just annoy me!
