what pups in a 1975 les paul?
« on: May 08, 2007, 01:43:31 PM »
bought it new in 1976
http://www.hetgelegevaar.nl/lespaulpoets.jpg
the bridge pup is gettin microphonic :(
I am 50, old stones fan, clapton, but Saitriani is the best :D
used to have a dual rectifier, still a bit sad I had to let it go a few years back.
now I'm playing a marshall TSL60 on 2 2x12 cabs
hardly use effex, will get my fixed up old leslie unit back soon.
did listen to some soundclips but hard to choose, depends on player too.
I like the rebel yells, but.. depends on player too.
so I'm not ur average vintage freak.
suggestions please?

I would go for Rebel Yells - hot, but still has that aspect of vintageness!!!

What type of tone are you after?

Mules - great all rounder
Rebel Yells - more powerful and brighter than Mules
Black Dogs - like a Mule but a bit darker and hotter
Cold Sweats - closest to what your original pickups are, pretty hot

???

the youtube compression makes it sound like a phaser has been used
and its recorded with the DV cam mike..

what if I only replace the neck?
both are around 8.4k DC

I have a fairly similar setup, TSL 60 and Les Paul. I'm saving up for my pickups and am thinking about going for a calibrated set of Mules for versatility although I have to admit to being swayed by Cold Sweats so that I can still play clean bluesy stuff but have that extra little kick when i decide to crank things up

I thought it was the bridge pickup that was the problem?
If you don't know what you really want, then a Mule is the best all rounder.

Aggressive bite?  Bassier = Black Dog, Treblier = Rebel Yells.

Uuuhhhhhhhh. *spaff*

That right there is the exact reason why people should let white/cream binding on black guitars age naturally. Some might say that looks cr@p and crusty... but to me, THAT is how a black guitar with binding should look.

Black 70's Les Paul Customs are right up there with 50's Teles and Strats, 60's SGLP's and late 50's Les Pauls in the pure guitar porn rankings. For sure.

*covets*

But, erm, to keep things on topic... ahem... if you choose the BKP route, then I'd say The Mule is the obvious choice - it's a veritable PAF in a box.
