Author Topic: Metal Pickups Set? (Read 5007 times)

I play death/thrash/melodeath/neoclassical/prog/folk and want to have pickups that can be used fairly well for most purposes. I mostly play death/thrash/neoclassical shred (well, neoclassical wank in my case) so I would prefer something that will handle this stuff better than the other styles. My issue is I've been looking at some dimarzio's and others and they look pretty good for getting that smooth, liquid lead sound for shred, but maybe its just the guys who use them but I need to get a really agressive sound from the bridge pickup to get that huge distorted chunk, and I can't tell from what I'm reading and the demos and samples I've heard which ones would be good for these applications. Someone at Ultimate Guitar reccomended I check out Bare Knuckles, so here I am.

I play a Dual Rec right now but I'm picking up and Engl in the near future (either a powerball or a savage so thats changing), and am looking to put these in my PRS standard 24 to see how it goes because I've never swapped the pickups out of one of my guitars before.

What pickup combination would you reccomend so that they were agressive enough for that heavy, high gain, aggressive riffing in the bridge position but can also give you that smooth liquid lead on the neck? I think the guy (sorry I can't remember what your username was if you end up reading this) reccomended a Miracle Man/Cold Sweat set, and someone else reccommended War Pigs and someone reccomended the Holy Diver. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these various pickups for the aforementioned application?

for the most crushingly heavy tone for death metal, the Ceramic Warpig is the way to go: i have one and use it for Death and Thrash purposes, and i couldn't ask for more.

i have heard good things about the Warpig neck, i will find a link for you...

Ceramic warpig/cold sweat combo.

C-Pig for extreme heaviness and aggression
CS for liquid shred

Is the miracle man not as good as the ceramic warpig then? Is it an output issue or a tonal difference?

the CWP is heavier (higher gain and higher output), and i think it has more bass then the MM. it is also slightly more scooped.

tonal and output difference :)

the MM has a bit more output, due to the massive ceramic magnet. it clocks in at 17ish kilo-ohm.. now add that magnet to a pickup, that goes over 21k and do the math :D

Could a warpig possibly be too bassy for playing really tight tech death and deathrash rhythms? I don't know of any artists that use either pickup and I live in western canada where no one I know has BKPs so I can't hear them anywhere really.

no, not too bassy at all. it is pretty well balanced. apart of that soaring midrange :D

Do you think the CWP/Cold Sweat set will match well with a PRS Standard 24?

Ixnay on the scooptay. The MM is the less middy of the two.

No better or worse. The C-Pig is more more powerfull by a far ways, heavier, more attacking and compressed. The MM isnt really an extreme metal pickup. Its too refined. It tops out somewhere round metallica. The C-Pig melts faces and crushes skulls.

CWP is approximately 21k.
