Squier 51 Pickup mods...
« on: May 18, 2007, 01:22:22 AM »
Righty! I nabbed myself a Squier 51 which is a gorgeous little guitar for less than £100 if I do say so myself! The neck alone is worth twice that much, and it's a beautiful guitar except for a few things:

1) The tuners, which don't really hold it in tune
2) The bridge which is a little bit of a mess
3) The pickups (here's the key really!)

It's got a tapped bucker in the bridge and a singlecoil in the neck, both stock.  I'm after a nice smooth toneful clean/solo tone on the neck, and a powerful, dynamically expressive bridge pup for overdriven rock.

For an example of the tone I'm after think Foo Fighters, Reuben (if anyone here knows Reuben! If you don't then head over to www.wordsfromreuben.com right now!), Deftones, that kind of thing. Basically I want chords to sound HUUUUUGE and completlely defined.

If anyone could suggest a viable pickup combo it'd be much appreciated! I have a Nailbomb fitted in the bridge position of my drop-A tuned ibanez SZ, and it completely kills. Awesome camo finish too

If anyone fancies suggesting decent tuner/bridge replacements that'd be neat too :D

Firstly, them 51's are insanely gorgeous guitars. Especially for the price!

For tuners/bridge - it depends entirely on how much you want to spend. If you want to SERSIOSLY pimp it... then I recommend looking at Tonepros bridges and some locking tuners.

As for pickups, I reckon you could work a reasonably "vintage-meets-hot vintage" feel with something like a VHII (bridge) and Slowhand (neck)

Or beef it right the $%&# up with Holy Diver (bridge) and a sinner (neck).

I dunno.

I'd also recommend not completely ruling out other types of pickups.
