First attempt at recording acoustic..
« on: May 22, 2007, 03:46:12 PM »
Had nothing else that important to do this afternoon (did all my revision this morning!), so I decided to give recording my acoustic a go:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=493678&songID=5370523

The playing isnt amazing but I'm actually quite pleased with the sound (except it gets a bit bassy/boomy on some bits). Very cheap/simple setup - Crafter D6 acoustic > SM57 rested on my desk and pointed at soundhole > laptop soundcard > Cubase

:)

Sounds OK mate, but a bit echo-y?  You may need a condenser mic to get a pro sounding acoustic recording.

I thought I might've gone a bit over the top with the reverb

Haha you added reverb?! Sounds more like bloody delay haha.

I think it's time for a remix!

I agree that there is a little too much reverb but the essential sound is there-have you noticed how much the sound changes when you change the position of the mic. If you  move the mic about and record an identical overdub and pan the two tracks l/r you can get a nice big sound.Messing around recording acoustics is educational. In the past I have often stuck an acoustic on a track and mixed it so that it kind of fills things without overpowering. Also, if you record a track in normal chord positions and then stick a capo on, say, the 5th fret and then play the same thing but obviously higher up the board (allowing for the capo of course) you can get a really huge tone-but you have to keep the strumming or picking similar.

Thanks for the tips mr 38th, I'll have to try that stuff out sometime.

As for my recording, I just updated it with much less reverb, same link as before! I just noticed that the start sounds really messy with the 2 guitars, so I'll re-record some time.
