A friend of my son is wanting to get himself started with a guitar and amp for no more than £250 and ideally closer to £200. So far I've come up with three options for him:

1) A starter pack done by a shop I know that cives him an Aria STG004 that has had a full setup and a Kustom 10w amp. The amp is decent and the guitar is great when well set up and gives loads of variety in sounds. That would come in at £209

2) Buy a Peavey Rotor with the same amp for about £245 if you include a strap and cable he'd get with the Aria.

3) Buy a Vintage VS-6 and a Vox AD15-VT for about the same £245

Which of those do you think would be best to start with or do you have any other ideas?

Get an amp like a little smokey and the best second hand guitar he can afford.

Or an acoustic of course    A nice spanish is always nice to learn on.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Does it have to be strat shaped ?

I mention this becasue the Aira PE is an execellent guitar, along with a microcube that would come in fairly under 250.

The little danelectro honeytone amp is great fun and comes in under 30 quid.

Guitar-wise I'd always say go second-hand, Ibanez RG321MH, Jackson JS-series but if it has to be brand new then go for a Vintage. Amp wise one of those new Vox modellers, or at least something with a bit of variety, Line6 Spider 30 or something.

Get a vintage i had one as my first guitar and i still love it to this day (i was really upset when it got stolen)

i got a vintage vb8BRQM with hardcase strap lead and some picks for £200 and sourced a marshall mg15dfx on ebay for £30

check ebay for vintages they have some really quality stuff at decent prices atm

also epiphone g400s go on ebay for about £80 every now and then

The Vox modeling amps that someone mentioned are wicked for starters and people like me (been playing a while, but I'm cr@p. so still a starter).  You can learn about what YOUR sound is.

i'd probably go with a microcube or the vox version of it (da5? haven't tried it, worth a try as it's its main competitor).

as for guitars... yamaha pacifica 112 is pretty good, some of the cheaper lags felt pretty good (probably better than the pacifica) when i tried them too.

best if you can try all you can though, as i haven't tried things like the arias mentioned (which are probably worth a look).

I can't recommend the Yamaha enough. I had one as a first guitar 12 (!) years ago, and it's still going, now belongs to a friend who recently took up guitar. Perhaps a Pacifica 012 might be a good bet, I've seen quite a few package deals teaming them up with perfectly decent little amps for around the £200 ballpark.

Anyhow, hope you can find something good and get another convert to six strings!

A shop in my town is knocking out Danelectros for £150.00 at the moment. If that is any use you can let me know and maybe we can work something out.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

+1

i think the VOX (AD series is it?) is great.

and to echo what dave and someone else said- the roland cubes are also decent as well.

either of them would get my vote.

I'd say Pacifica too, it was my first electric, and every shop I went in to said that it was one of the best beginners' around. Although the 112's are pretty much £200 on their own.
