hi

i have NO money at the moment, and i would like to record my guitar for more than the 60 seconds that windows sound recorder permits me to...
so....
is there any basic free recording software that i can use my built in laptop mic with and that can record more than 60 second?

Cool Edit Pro can be had using your favourite P2P software ;)

Out of the "proper" free ones though, I've only used Audacity. Its really good for quick recordings, and very easy to use.

you can cheat in sound recorder... record all the way through to the 60 second mark, then press record again. it'll go for another 60 seconds. do this a few times, save the file as "blank" or something, and you can record several minutes.

of course, dedicated recording programs are better.

EDIT: can you record more than one track with audacity, mix them, change the levels of each etc. (bear with me, i know nothing about recording)?

Soundforge is a good tool to record with, i'd recommend that. Make sure you've got your system optimised (enough RAM, closing apps you're not using etc.) when you go to record if you are monitoring other tracks at the same time, otherwise you'll get a nice lag and it'll all be out of time!

that reaper is very good, also if you Scard ain't too hot can download a prog called asio4all can get most Scards to record then in most progs

Kristal Audio Engine- completely free, and bloody useful. My mate's using it to record some proper (but still pretty piss-take) stuff using a computer microphone and the quality's not half bad.
