WHat should an ashdown fa60 (fallen angel) sound like
« on: May 28, 2007, 12:29:47 PM »
my housemate has bought one a few days ago and with the gain up FULL the most distortion it gets is like a hard blues sort of breakup

and thats even using my mahogany LP with the miracle man with it

ive asked a few other people and they say it probably needs revalving as theyre sure it should be a lot higher gain than that.

Is it the normal one or the DSP one?

The normal one has been discontinued now - Not so normal anymore :p

I'm pretty sure this was named the nu metal amp so it sounds like some maintenance is needed.

I had a Ashdown FA60DSP half stack and it had no gain, exactly the same thing your housemate experienced. Does he also find lack of definition with the amp? Mine was all bassy and had no bite to the sound at all.

Using the effect return control on the back you can sorta increase the gain but it was still shitee.

Seriously, the sound he is describing is channel 1 with the gain all the way up.

check the tubes, and if they got a nice orange glow to them. he probably needs new tubes and a bias. get all the connections checked out to be sure too

Are you changing using the pedal or the amp?

Just don't let them know who I am ok?

Also, I've had the damn thing on for about an hour now, on a reasonably low volume, so can't expect too much gain, but I have a considerable amount and my valves are glowing orange. They'd probably be bright if that light wasn't there though (The VU metre in the amp has a light which lights up all insides too lol.)

and to the other dude, I know the difference between channels. Cheers for patronising me though, much appreciated.

Cheers to everyone here.

I'm not trying to be patronising, it's just he perfectly described what channel 1 with maximum gain sounds like. A) the amp switch and pedal have to be set up just right initially else the pedal doesn't work properly, B) if your last amp was a single channel Laney, it would be an easy mistake to make. How low are you playing at? It needs to be 3-4 or more to come alive, otherwise it just sounds flat and muddy, without much gain.
