Pickup recommendations for mahogany RG
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:32:34 PM »
I Just recently picked up a RG2020xtb, which is mahogany with the Double Edge bridge. I play primarily metal, 80s and modern, and shred as well. For the bridge I'm looking for something that has high output, good clarity for fast riffage, and great metal rhythm tones. The neck I need something fluid, and excellent for soloing, as well as cleans. I had been considering Dimarzios (Tone Zone, Steve's Special, Super Distortion), and EMG 81 for the bridge, and maybe an Air Norton, EMG 89 or 60 for the neck. I have heard several clips of BKs, particularly the Miracle Man, what pickup combo do you guys think I should go with?

miracle man or nailbomb in the bridge
in the neck you could go with cold sweat if you want a more airy and PAFy but singing tone (like an DM air classic, i think) or the miracle man neck (which is the same as the old version of cold sweat neck) for really powerful leads (like tone zone or emg 85 neck tones)
nailbomb neck will be between these two, i think
i'd like to know about painkiller neck
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

For the bridge I'd go with the Miracle Man if you like a cutting and metallic tone or the Cold Sweat if you like it to be a little richer.

For the neck you are describing a Cold Sweat.

how would you compare the Miracle man to an EMG 81, and the Cold Sweat to a Duncan 59, Jazz, and Dimarzio Air Norton.

I think the Nailbombs upper mids and mahoganys natural lower mids and bass response fill out the sound spectrum and it sounds absolutely huge!

A few of my friends have used Nailbomb/Mahogany combo and so am I atm and it's deffinatly a winning combination, although the Miracle Man isn't to be scorned at I really like that pickup also.

Miracle Man and EMG 81 are often compared to each other on this forum, the differences are that the Miracle Man is made with better components and has bags more tone. Uuually when people ask for the EMG 81 sounding pickup except better they get recommened the Miracle Man.

I don't know about the Cold Sweat but whenever someone wants a neck pickup to pair with the MM they get recommened the CS lol it's just become kind of a standard thing now because they pair so well.

The MM is supposed to be like a passive EMG 81 for sure and I've heard the Cold Sweat compared to a few SD pups but in reality it's like a Gibson Dirty Fingers so whatever SD pup is nearest to that I suppose.

I'm pretty much settled on the Cold Sweat, but still kinda up in the air whether I should get a Nailbomb or Miracle Man for the bridge. Tones I'm looking for are Megdeth, Children of Bodom, Hammerfall, Metallica, something crushing but not muddy for metal.

the MM is considerably tighter/more-crushing than the NB - I'd recommend the MM for the older thrash type tones you're wanting.

I like that thick violin 85emg tone.... so does Tim make an old and new version CS neck. How is new version different?

the new version is 8.35 (like dimarzio air classic) and is a little scooped on mids for more calm paf sound, but very open sounding and keeping a nice sustain for soloing

the old version is the same as miracle man neck which is 17.5k (really monster winding for a neck pickup)

Tim actually recommended the Nailbomb set, could someone give me a rundown of the Miracle Man vs. the Nailbomb, and also the Nailbomb neck vs. cold sweat for the neck. Thanks
