Author Topic: Rosewood neck back on my strat! (Read 4051 times)

As I'm selling the MIM neck I recently bought off PhilKing due to me not getting on with the radius, decided to put my old copies neck back on. Now I cant decide which I prefer the look of! The rosewood one does feel nicer to play I have to admit, though I dont know if thats just due to me prefering the flatter neck.

I was also surprised how much the neck affects tone! It sounds much nicer to me now, a bit warmer - not as bright. I'm still contemplating getting a custom neck done by Legra, though I'm quite happy with this at the minute, I just need new tuners!

Anyone tried the Grover Locking mini-rotomatics? The axesrus description for em is - "6 in line Chrome GROVER® MINI rotomatics original polished Locking Guitar Tuners. Finally a locking tuner with Grover Quality. .405C MODEL ,KEY LOCK" if that helps identify them..

Oh, and this strats going HSS soon, trying out my Rebel Yell in the bridge when I get tuners sorted out :twisted: Bridge singlecoil is ok, but I find it gets easily overpowered by the middle one (and therefore probably neck), even though the bridge is a trilogy!

hmms I cant decide, they both look good, I do think I prefer the sound of rosewood board tho..

I'm even considering selling it all though, because I just know I love Gibson style guitars, its gonna take loads of tweaking to get a strat to feel as nice to me, and I really want an sg :lol:

I like the look of the maple fingerboard better, but if the sound of the rosewood is better in your opinion, then keep it

generally i like maple better, but on your specific guitar, they look equally good, tom.

I haven't tried the 405 series Grovers, but I have tried the newer 406 series (or, in fact, the 3-per-side 106 series). The 405s look like they screw down with a screwdriver, coin or something; the 406s have a cam mechanism in the tuner post so it grips the string automatically, without any tools.

The problem with the 106 set is that the tuner posts are far too long, so you don't get a good angle behind the nut. The 406s might not have the same problem - they really shouldn't, because it's even more important to get the right behind-the-neck angle on a Strat.

My favourite locking tuners are Gotoh Magnum Locks. They use a fairly similar principle to the Grover 406s, but don't have the post-length problem. They're a little more expensive than the Grovers at Axes'r'us prices, might be available cheaper on eBay though.

And of course, there's always Sperzel.

Hi Tom, sorry you didn't like the maple neck. It is a vintage spec and that is why the radius is smaller. You should use what you like best, but if you are going to sell the guitar anyway, put the maple neck back on.

Yeah, I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.. I like the newer MIM necks, but I've never played a strat where its been as easy/nice to play as my LP. Probably the scale length I need to adjust to though, not really sure. Maybe its just because I'm so used to the LP that everything else takes ages to get used to.

Anyway, I decided that the 'board doesnt make as much difference as I thought really (at least to my ears). It seems to when you're not plugged in, but when plugged in it sounds pretty much the same to me :lol: So I decided my next neck will be maple, because it looks better :)

:lol: I feel like an absolute idiot now. I just put the vintage style MIM neck back on for a quick testing, and it feels really good - the action just needed adjusting properly - guess I didnt take enough care when I first set it up :oops: :oops: :oops:

You can still get locking tuners to fit that neck!

I was actually thinking about getting some locking tuners for it :) The ones on it dont seem bad though, but unbranded I think, so I dont know of their quality. I'm gonna try my Rebel Yell in the bridge of this strat - perhaps because of its brightness I'll still be able to use 250k pots with it so the singles will still sound good without the need for resistors or anything.

They're unbranded because it is a 'vintage 57' neck and in those days they had no branding! They are probably Klusons which are not bad really (my old ones are starting to go a bit after 45-50 years!).

If you put locking tuners on, you will have to ream out the holes, as they are drilled for Klusons.

If I have to ream anything out I wont bother, but surely those ones Philly Q pointed out will fit, if they're Kluson style/size just with locking posts?
