The only thing that could suck is that when i go to college everyday there would be no one at home and i don't know what that effect that would have on a dog.
Surely there are many dog owners who go to work or school everyday who own a dog, so what advice would you give for this situation?

Personally I wouldn't want to leave a dog on its own for more than 4-5 hours, but it depends on the dog itself. I think my dog would be fine with longer periods but then she's generally asleep.

Well, I think a dog will adapt, if you leave him alone for several hours, he will suffer. But most likely not complain.

Best case only his energy levels will be low and his physical activity will be below a healthy level. Dogs that sleep all the time do so because there's nothing better for them to do.

If you work and noone can take care of the dog, you shouldn't get one, it would be very selfish.

Ideally you have kids and can share the responsibilities with them. Dogs are great, but you don't wanna live with the guilt of having an animal that you can't give a good life.

Hunter you make it sound so harsh!
Well anyways it looks like i will not be getting a dog after all as my parents can't stand dogs and i said this:

"there is no chance that a dog will ever step foot in this house"

So that pretty much sealed it.
