If you have a Boss Metal Zone it'll kill pretty much all responsiveness.

My H&K Tube Factor is just as dynamic and touch responsive as any good tube amp. On a low gain setting I can play it gently and it wil sound clean. As you start digging in harder it will become louder and dirtier. Great for songs like House Of The Rising Sun or Bobby McGee.

Indeed. I would say it's the combination pedal / amp. Usually, pedals emphasize certain frequencies and some amps need just those, some have too many already.

And the guitar. And the pickups. And the player.

Well u must get a truly transparent pedal that lets the amp breathe it tone out and does not change the way it distort. To me a few gd pedal for this kind of job is Skreddy Scrwdriver, Jon Blackstone 2SV3, and BOR for Marshall amp.

I think an OD is a must for older single channel Marshalls. Even a mediocre OD really brings them to life.

EDIT:woo 300th post! ok, I'll shut up

I meant to say - I say ALL overdrive pedals colour tone in some way, that's the job, if you want something utterly transparent then opt for a clean boost which will simply milk your tubes a bit more - my SPF Ego Booster is brilliant.
