Rainbow Rising!
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:33:04 AM »
i brought "long live rock'n'roll" some time ago in a charity shop, and thought it was kind of ok, with some good and not-so-good tracks...

but i just found a copy of "rising" just lying there on the street. i took it back to my house and wow! what a top album!! everything on it really rocks :) :)

just thought i'd share my joy with you all!

what other rainbow albums are worth adding to my collection?

great 70s metal tone on the album - i'd buy a strat now, but i've never played one i liked the feel of :( and i've tried hard.

rising is pretty much their best

i like Long Live but it is a bit patchy as is  their debut: Rainbow

Rainbow on stage is good - Dio era

Down to Earth has quite a few good tunes with Grahgam Bonnet

Difficult to Cure is good as is straight between the eyes - both Joe Lynn Turner

Pretty much agree with what Jonathan said above, but Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is worth getting just for "Man On The Silver Mountain".  What an awesome song.  Great album cover too - I have it embroidered   on the back of my old denim jacket from the first Donington in 1980!

I like Long Live more now than I did at the time - the title track, "L.A. Connection" and "Gates Of Babylon" are great songs.  And "Rainbow Eyes" is a lovely ballad with one of Dio's best ever vocals (in a similar vein to Coverdale's "Soldier Of Fortune" on Stormbringer).

The Joe Lynn Turner period got increasingly dull, Difficult To Cure still has the magic though.  I'd avoid Bent Out Of Shape, by that stage it seemed Blackmore was bored with his own band.

I recently bought the Live In Munich 1977 DVD, which is excellent.  So different from gigs today.  Blackmore, as always, seems to do whatever the hell he wants as it takes his fancy, and he's brilliant.  And Dio's voice hadn't developed the hoarseness he has nowadays.

There are also several live Rainbow albums which have been released in the last few years, I haven't got any of them so don't know which are the good ones.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Rising is the only Rainbow album I own but I've listened to plenty of others and none come close. Both Dio and Blackmore are on top form, the songs are great especially Tarot Woman. It's really worth hunting down a vinyl copy and get a decent turntable and turn it up!

I've got them all on vinyl, with those lovely gatefold sleeves.  If only I still had a turntable...

Rainbow Rising is a great album. While I have a soft spot for Dio (he is the MASTER), I prefer his Black Sabbath and solo work to Rainbow.

Best singer in Rainbow = Joe Lynn Turner!!

:D "Rising" is beyond any doubt Blackmores finest hour. His playing is simply awe inspiring. Dio`s vocals are the perfect match for blackmores guitar. Great killer songs from the opening of "Tarot Woman" to the final bars of "A Light In The Black" this is a must have in your collection guys if your into Hard/Rock, Metal etc

Love it, despite hosting one of the most ludicrous lyrics ever:
"We built a tower of stone With our flesh and bone"
Just misses out to
"tonight there's going to be a jailbreak, somewhere in the town"
Anyway, back on topic, love the album except "do you close your eyes", which just doesn't do it for me... tones weird too.
