Nailbomb >> 5150 (Electric Wizard, tuned down to C)

I'm on a bit of a recording trip at the minute - the old 4-track was gathering dust in the cupboard so it seemed a shame to let it rot

Here's a clip of the bridge Nailbomb in my Explorer into my 5150.  It's quite a different tone to the one I'd usually dial in but I wanted to try and cop the sludgey feel that EW have on this track.  If anything I've got too much mids going on but the NB and 5150 combination make that so almost regardless of how much you try and scoop the midrange.

Amp was fairly loud in the room though still barely ticking over for a 120w head - master set to 1.

I used two mics as you can see from the picture below - one to capture the note detail and the other for low end chunk (worked really well actually).

Wow!! That sounds completely retro, like it was actually recorded decades ago, impressive!
I love the tone, it sounds like Iommi's back in the day, except downtuned.
Keep the clips comin'

I love that tone. Sounds like a vintage Celtic Frost tone. Nice.

that sounds awesome! really lofi and vintage like, it makes me even consider buying an analogue setup. My mate said he bought a 60's 4 track made by the BBC, real deal for only Ģ60 off ebay. How much did the tape machine cost you? cheers.

cheers, the 4-track is an old Tascam cassette type.  I seem to remember paying around Ģ350 back in the mid 90s.  I don't really think it contributes to the sound of the recording that much to be honest - I used to get similar results on my old HDD setup, the mic preamp on the 4-track is just pretty cr@p so I think that explains any 'retro' tone (heh)

I'd love an old 2" tape 4-track - getting a BBC one means you're getting fabulous quality.  The only downside with machines this old is maintenance and of course the cost of doing demos using (expensive) 2" tape.

Ah. then i assume itīs a borad Fault.
Hej man,can you design a Amp with Tons of gain, tight Bass, crunchy Mids and Searing highs and a compressed distortion sound?  for 1000 USD or 100 euros?
30 watts. Can be a SS amp.
i sold my crate and iīm looking forward to get a small 30 watts amp.
that can give me unholy distortion, tight(as a rats ass) bass, crunching(like a popcorn )mids and Searing and/or Open Highs ?!

If I could do that I'd be a rich man right now.  You get what you pay for - quality components cost alot to begin with, it would cost close to Ģ500 just to buy the components for a scratch build amp of REAL quality.

What happened to your 5150? - I use mine for bedroom jamming, it can go really quiet if you need it to.

That's fu*king awesome. THE END

FAT tone, I've been trying to do that with VHII's in my LP, without much joy.

I find p90's do stoner sludge stuff quite well too.

Cheers Ted, the Nailbombs needed some EQing to get them that sludgy but it just goes to show how versatile they can be.  If I wanted that sludge tone all the time, I'd get Warpigs again.

Excellent. You answered my next question!

I've been deliberating over what to get next, I was going to go for a Warpig, but then I heard your clip and it blew me away. But if you're saying it took a bit of fiddling to get it right, then maybe I should go for a Warpig.

I'm defo going for a MQ in the neck though, I've wanted to install this pickup combo in a guitar for ages.

I'm now deliberating of whether to chuck the VHII's out of the Les Paul and get a Nailbomb in the bridge with a MQ in the neck too...

Maybe I overstated things, I just had to adjust my EQ on the amp a bit but you'd do that with any pickup.  What I was really pointing out was that the EQ settings were fairly extreme to get those tones with the Nailbomb...  I had the bass on full, mids down to around 4, treble around 8, presence 8, resonance on full, gain on full.

My usual settings for a metal distortion would be... bass 6, mids 7, treble 8, presence 8, resonance 6.

Like I said before, if all I wanted was that kind of sludge/doom/stoner tone then it would be Warpig, no hesitation.

If I wanted something more versatile that can turn it's hand to a few things, then the Nailbomb would be 'it'.
