AC/DC's tone
« on: June 19, 2007, 08:32:00 PM »
Just been watching Family Jewels and Live at Donnington.

They have awesomeeeeeeee tones. I love the really early glassy tone of songs like "Baby please don't go" through to the thick tones of "Inject the venom" and "Back in black".

Some great tones especially for no pedals!!

AC/DC's tone is all about no pedals - just plug straight it and crank the amp.  Some of my fave guitar tones of all time - checkout Mal's tone at the start of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (omg!!)

Agreed - awesome!  Shame our "Malcolm" insists on using his Gretch MY Signature  :)  through a DSL 50  :(

Angus tone on "The Jack" from the If You Want Blood live album (actually, the whole album...) is what I try and get from my gear for YC/DC.  His playing on that album is superb too.  'DC at their peak.

it's funny you should mention that specific song and recording - it's one of my all time fave Angus moments too.  his phrasing and attack on that song are just incredible.

HTH - It's a absolute classic isn't it?  Fantatsic playing.

Tom - We're doing "What Do You Do For Money Honey" tomorrow night at rehearsal as it will probably be in the set for our next gig.  I love that track and tone.  On your GH50L you'll need to keep the gain down (don't use the extra stage either), boost the master and keep the bass low (your G12Hs will fill the sound out).  You've got to crank it

As good as AC/DC are, I find them to be so one-track and repetitive.

Horses for courses I guess!

I must admit, I appreciate them much more after playing in a 'DC band.  You realise all the subtleties and clever arrangements in their tunes when you try and work them out.

Very good !

An old Plexi turned up loud does the best AC/DC sound
The Dennis Cornell Plexi 45/50 is one of the best I've heard

But a Marshall 2203/2204 will do a good sound- dont use too much preamp gain though.

Phew thanks Jonathan..... I thought I was the only one on this forum old enough to remember that series

I like many AC/DC numbers. Apart from a great tone, Angus has a knack of dropping an odd note, bend or phrase into a solo which completely lifts it.

I think Malcolm's best tone is in Night Prowler. That is THE sound of a Gretsch Jet through a Marshall in rock setting.

If I played in a (profitable) AC/DC cover band, I'd try to get my hands on a Roccaforte.
