Doubt it - unless you've strung a piece of cheese wire between them :)  Instrument cables should be able to handle the load, though it is better to get a cable that was intended for amp->speaker (hint: it says "speaker" on the packet :))

I use 3ft spectraflex speaker cable.

Speaker cable is shielded.  If you use a guitar cable and it breaks, which it can easily under the output load of an amp, it's bye-bye transformer  :(

The easy way to tell is that the cable should be a lot thicker and stronger than your guitar lead.

It can't, you NEED to use speaker cable.

yep, I'd advise against using (single-core, screened) guitar cable for speaker loads - not a great idea.

speaker cable should be fairly cheap to buy, certainly no more expensive than a typical guitar lead.  you don't need to go crazy on the gauge of wire either - look at the shitee bell-wire Marshall use inside their cabs.

It can't

In my experience, that's not strictly true.  For years, my old band wired up speakers with whatever came to hand from our box of cables.  It wasn't until the 90s that I started buying decent quality cables.  I've never blown an output transformer.

Now I don't disagree that he should use proper speaker cable - let's face it, if you've bought a Ģ1000 head & Ģ500 cab you really ought to make the effort to track down a Ģ15 cable that was designed for the task :)

Disagree that the speaker cable looks any different.  Many decent quality instrument cables are quite heavy duty.  Apart from having "SPEAKER" printed on it, the cable looks no different (at least not to the naked eye) - although I've never attempted to tie one to a tree & swing from it to test its strength :)

Anyway - this is just nitpicking.  He should go to the shops & buy a cable that says "Speaker Cable" on the packet - if for no other reason than his own peace of mind... :)

instrument cable can handle the load it's only about 30volts going to a speaker it's not massive voltage but i'd never use an instrument cable just incase because i've heard of many people blowing an OT using instrument cable thats packed in.

MY ONLY 100% Trust Source are you guys. so, if you could send me the pics of teh cables you are using, that would solve my problems.

I use speaker cables that I made up using some monster cable speaker cable from a HIFI shop (and it's huge) with oversize Switchcraaft jacks on it

If you are good at soldering - make your own - you can use mains power cable and it will work well - certianly able to handle the wattage that a valve head throws out .

Also use a colour that is WAY different to your guitar cables

i remember yyears ago Doug at Black Machine used to use the nylon braided electric iron flex cable and it worked great.
Or use the bright orange stuff like you see on power tools or garden equipment - hard to mistake.

Ok Ok - its not exactly Hi-Fi but certainly better than guitar cables and as good as the cables that most amp makers supply free with their cabinets and heads

For more info on cables check out

The best cables...  ever!!!  They also do speaker cables.

I agree with Mr. Ed.  I would never use a normal guitar/instrument cable on speaker.  Although it may work for the time being, it is not good for your amp head and there is always a chance of something blowing.

On the left is the speaker cable, on the right is a standard guitar cable. note the difference in thickness.
