Tommy Bolin

I've got a bit of a vintage/ rock Strat project going on...

I'm buying a Mexican Classic '50s Strat (alder body, maple fingerboard)... just hunting around until I find one that sounds great unplugged. Then I'm going to stick a VHII in the bridge, and... er, some other single coils in the neck and middle.

Anyway, I've been listening to Tommy Bolin's playing lately, and I really like that thick Strat tone he gets. What pickups would you guys recommend for that?

OK, this next bit belongs in the tech section but I'm lazy:
While I have the guitar in bits, is it worth replacing all the pots and electrics? I mean, seriously worth it. I'm not a total tone obsessive. I can't hear the difference between a 10 foot guitar lead and a 20 foot one. I use unmodified BOSS pedals and I think they sound fine. So I'll only gut the guitar if it's essential.
Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.
