Meh, reverse headstock machine heads...
« on: June 28, 2007, 08:44:01 PM »
Hey all,

Anyone know where I can get some Gold machine heads that are not the usual way around? I am changing all the hardware on one of my Axes to Gold, it's an old Bronze series BC Rich Mockingbird, which I will be putting a set of Gold-covered calibrated Nailbombs in. Thing is, (I'm rubbish at telling which is reverse etc) I think it's a reverse headstock. It's not a 3-a-side headstock, it's a 6-in-line, and all I can find on spare parts websites are either 3-a-side or 6-in-line for a normal headstock, which is a problem. Nowhere seems to do just 6 left-hand tuners (think that's what they're called!)

To illustrate what I mean, here is what a normal machine head looks like: http://www.axesrus.com/images/LOCKBIG.jpg

and here is what mine look like: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/SnakeStyleMaster/28-06-07_2032.jpg

As you can see, the screw fixing on the normal ones is the opposite side to where I need it to be.

I could always fill the hole with filler and make new holes for the new machine heads, but I'm lazy and also want it to look good, so it's kinda not an option, heh.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Aye, found a few but for some reason the words "Gold" and "Left Hand" in the same sentance are a big Taboo in the spare parts world, heh!

I might just take that extra step and email some manufacturers and see who can supply lefties.

I don't know how easy they'll be for you to find, and I'm equally unsure if they'll fit but Gotoh makes left hand gold tuners (confusingly they label them 'R', and the right hand ones they label as 'L'), looking at your tuner I'd say the SG503 or SG381 might fit the bill.

thats because calling them right or left handed can be a little confusing- lets say i was making a left handed 7 string guitar and needed an extra tuner to complete a 3x3 set so i could have 3x4 tuner arrangment - calling the tuners right or left handed can cause confusion!!

they call them R and L because they are looking at the headstock from the front rather than a left or right handed perspective - now from my point of view it would be easy to look at my plans for the 7 string lefty and see whether i needed an extra tuner on the right or left of the headstock

. . .   they dont have the tuners this fellow needs.

i.e..  gold, left handed (for the right side of the headstock  ) and need to look kinda like the picture above.

It looks like GPR only have the vintage style ones in gold - left handed

I do like guitar parts resource though, and with the exchange rate the way it is they are an excellent supplier

Sperzels can be made left or right handed.  There was a thread a while back about it.  I'll have a look and post it in a bit.

Dag Nabbit, can't find it.  Have a search round and it's there.  If it's sperzels though, you may have to drill a couple of holes.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I've got a gold gotoh hard tail set that's surplus to requirments.  It's got gold 3x3 tuners though but I'd split it if don't want the tuners.  It's a Les Paul set so you'd have to check if it fits.

It's got TOM bridge, Stop Tail, Jack Plate, Neck Plate (dunno why being an LP set), 4 Metal Knobs and all the screws, posts etc.  Let me know if your interseted because a) you get it cheaper than what I paid for it and b) I need to buy a silver TOM bridge and some pick up rings with the money.

ha ha, found it.  Here's a copy of a post by a bloke called flyod on the Patrick Eggle forum (can't link to it as you need to sign in).  I can no credit for it.

This may be of help or interest to those people that didn’t know that you could change a left handed Sperzel to a right handed or vice-versa. You would therefore be able to change a set of six in line to a set of three a side or vice-versa if needed, or to change the hand of an individual spare to replace a broken one. It is very easy, all you have to do is: - remove the screw located at the end of the tuning key, pull the key off, followed by the small black washer, and then the bell shaped sleeve. Push the centre spindle out, making sure that the locking wheel is loosened so that the gears can move easily inside the main body, a little wiggling and turning may be required to release the spindle. Insert the spindle into the opposite side of the main body, (again you may need to wiggle it about a bit to get it seated hard up against the main body), and assemble the other parts on to the spindle, all that’s left is to adjust the tension of the screw to adjust the tension of the tuning key, job done.

Wow, neat bit of D.I.Y there! As for the parts, I actually just bought a bunch of hardware before reading this, doh! Some of that stuff would require a fair bit of extra work to fit too and I'm a lazy git, lol.

Thanks for the offer though mate.

Went to my local Axery this morning and after 30 mins of trawling they found a product code for a left hand set in a dusty old catalog. They are currently trying to order them in for me. Fingers crossed!!!
