Right, Hi - just joined
Am ripping apart an old guitar
Just curious about what tonal effect gluing a bolt on neck in, aswell as bolting it in would have?

I would say none whatsoever. The socket you're gluing it too won't be a very tight fit (like a set neck is) so there'll be no benefit.

I'd say the effect would be a negative one rather than a positive one. Surely the glue between the wood of the neck and wood of the body would absorb some of the vibrations, not allowing it to resonate so well.
I'd say the advantage to it would be added strength... but then if the neck did break it would be harder to replace.

a bolt on join is much stronger than a glued in neck - if in doubt take a few over the head swings with a nice vintage strat and a LP onto a solid concrete floor - the strat might survive, the lp wont.

I wouldnt glue the neck in place because chances are you have finish on the neck and in the pocket - thats going to stop you getting a nice clean glue join so you cant garantee a strong join - even if it is nice and tight. Even if you strip it it will never be as good a join as you would get on fresh wood.

simple stuff like getting a nut that isnt plastic, doing a fretdress - stuff like that will get you so far but after a certain point it becomes like polishing a turd

definately need a new nut - the old one broke in half while i was playing
i was heading in the direction of some BKPs for it, but i just bought an acoustic...
i was thinking of putting a carved top on it randomly, anybody heard of a carved top V ?

I have used the locking ones with the red button on a few guitars, stopped using them because they stick out too much for my tastes and even people who know hot to use them pull funny faces when removing the jack - that tells me they are unneccisary.

I solved the sticking out thing on a recent bass by recessing it:

But that creates the problem of a thin bit of wood on the front - which is obviously a weak spot - but the jack was a client request so had to be incorporated.

I suppose i should show the rest of the bass now - i rather like this thing.

So you say they're pretty useless?

I allways wondered - Surely if you trip or catch the lead of something it's better that the lead falls out than the jack being pulled out of the wood?

not useless - just completely unneccisary.

I agree that its probably better if the jack pulls out when stepped on rather than rip out all the jack socket with it - and suddenly it takes two hands to safely remove your jack which increases the likelyhood of you dropping the guitar
