what's more important when it comes cabs: speakers, wood or open/closed back

and if a well known brand makes a closed back 17mm plywood cab with vintage 30s, is it going to be any different to a less known brand that makes a cheaper closed back 17mm plywood cab with vintage 30s

Neither is 'more important' than the other, just what fits your sonic profile and playing requirements. Each design sounds different.

Whatever 'sounds' right to YOU! Studios have a plethora of different cabs with all combinations (or should) as all give different character. There is no 'right' just what sounds right to you really.

i agree with nick and ben.

I guess speakers are the easiest thing to replace; though if the cab company is willing to cheap out on speakers, the actual cab construction probably isn't great either.

Quality of plywood, quality of joints (construction), how well acoustically engineered the space inside the cab is, ported or not, front mounted or rear mounted speakers, etc etc lots of variables.

Big difference for yourself when you play the cab. It's gotta have the right mix of resonance (the wood of the cab "swings") and stiffness/tightness.

This is why it makes a big difference if a cab is made of MDF or proper wood (baltic birch) or layers of wood.

In a situation where the cab is close mic'ed, the difference is not very audible, but on all other application, everything has to be right.

Don't also forget the context/room in which the cab is placed. This will as well have a huge impact as your position towards the cab.

Anyway, I have 3 cabs and they all sound COMPLETELY different.


Cheaper cabs are best avoided, also i personally don't like mudshalls... sorry I mean Marshall cabs.

Peavey and ENGL I have found to be quite good. Carvin make great cabs, Mesa and Soldano also.

I suppose that's the V30's.

The 'shalls i've used with 75's have sucked wide balls. especially live; i couldn't hear $%&# all, I had the presence almost all the way up also!!!

Best cab out there for the money would probably either be an Orange with v30's or an ENGL.

I've read a few people on HC saying that Orange cabs dont record too well for some reason. I cant think why, seems a bit weird. Must just be the construction?

I still want an Orange 2x12, only really because they look cool though, theres nothing wrong with my sound at the minute, just curious as to how much different it'd sound.  :lol:

It doesn't matter if it's cheap, of course if you spend more you usually get more but in some cases it can be different. It's the same with guitars, lots of people prefer to buy cheaper korean made guitars which sound just as good as custom ones which cost a lot more dollar, but that's usually if they try it out first.
I think the best thing to do is try out cabs and get one that YOU like and which ever one sounds best to YOU, internet shopping and buying the best gear possible can be a biatch sometimes and generally it is better to go to a shop and try first before you spend the cash.
Some of my internet purchases have turned out to be cr@p and i could have saved a lot of money if i had tried out at a shop first.

I bought a Splawn over the 'tinterweb and wasn't impressed, I love the clips even today but my amp sounds nothing like that in person, everyone thats heard it has loved it. Im not a fan!

I almost bought a Vintage Modern to replace it over the net but tried it in a store and was like holy cr@p, this is cr@p! then proceeded to try the Orange Tiny Terror and was just about sold when a sales guy asked if I wanted to try the Cornford Hurricane. Best thing I ever did.

I used the 75-one first before I got the vintage 1960 - big difference.

G12-75Ts aren't my cup of tea at all.  They only seem to suit Marshalls for some reason.
