My Amp Has Died
« on: July 23, 2007, 08:03:27 PM »
I've just got my amp back from the shop where the tubes had been replaced. Turned it on and played it for a couple of minutes, then I started to hear some popping noises and the amp just died and now won't turn back on.
Does anyone know whats wrong with it?
Thanks

Sounds like a bad valve has taken out the HT fuse (yep, you can get bad valves right out the box).  Take the amp back to the shop and ask them to check it out.

When I do bias/revalve jobs I leave the amp running for a few hours to see if the biasing drifts and bad valves will show up during this period.  Of course, buying from a reputable dealer in the first place means you get burned-in valves that are unlikely to drift much and will be tested on shorts etc.

My Laney did that once, turned it on and popped and died.

Valves are worth it for the tone though.

Picking up the JCM800 from the service tomorrow sweeeet.

Deakins

Is there any way of telling which of the tubes are faulty and which fuse has blown?

Why bother checking?  You've just paid them for a service and it's not right.  Take it straight back for them to fix, and don't pay them any more money.
