Koa only comes from one relatively small place so supplies are always going to be limited and the flamed wood is always going to be most sought after - those bloody ukelele makers want all the stuff and are much closer to get first dibs

damn those ukelele makers, guitars are FAR more important!

Related woods do exists elsewhere though - autralian blackwood for instance.  The wood varies quite a lot in appearance like all woods but some blackwood is very, very similar to koa

I will have to look into this.  I assume it is very different than African Blackwood... same species though?  It is so interesting how very similar plants are distributed around the world.  Next thing you know we will be finding Jarra Burl and Quilted Maple on one of Jupiter's Moons  :o

It's not so understated plugged in though - the pickups are Warpigs!!

haha, nice!

African blackwood is a type of rosewood (dalbergia) that varies from a reddy colour to very, very black

koa and australian blackwood are both large acacias with reddy, golden brown wood and can have very even flames when figured.

That's true, my guitar has an African blackwood fretboard. It's very dense and has a darker tap tone than other rosewoods I've tried. It's as black as ebony with only a few chocolate brown stripes.

Yeah, I had a morning phoning around woodwind makers looking for some small pieces of african blackwood.  Even ended up speaking to some bagpipe makers.  It seems the vast majority of them have an agreement to send their offcuts to people who make chess boards........I just wanted four bits for a snooker cue that I was planning on building.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

finally got some completely finished pics, it might even be making it into a guitar calender - i will let you know about that when i have more info.

I have also had a few people playing the fanned fret LP and everyone seems shocked by how easy it is to play - so i guess i will have to get that finally finished off now.  Only a few months late

I had already admired the floor.  I was going to make a comment about that too.  Very nice......... New floor and Burton thorugh to the second round of the FA Cup, what more could you ask for  :)

Actually, I was just up the road from you the other day.  Doing some work on the A50/A38 junction.... Another KFC (amongst other things), just what we all needed

Cool guitar!

It matches well with the kitchen floor. I think you should leave it there.
