Just curious Wez, have you ever used a Koa top?  I am thinking about using a Koa top on my next build, and that black burst looks so damn good, i think it might even look nice on a koa top.  That goldeny brown warmth of koa mixed with black burst... what do you think?

i did a koa topped semi hollow tele a few years back.  its a beautifull wood even unflamed in its natural state - a burst like this could look good but it would need to be kept very subtle to make sure you were not suppressing the natural shimmer of the koa

do you have a picture?  i am drooling thinking about flamed koa, or curly koa mmmmhmm.  Yeah, i agree, a real subtle burst would be essential, if i decide to do a burst at all.

One small blurry pic is all i have and the colour isnt great on it either - this was before i had a camera that would actually take a photo.

Not the fanciest piece of koa but i liked the stripes

Yeah, not gonna disagree on that, but treat it as a learning experience. Nice body though.

Koa, IMHO looks bloody fantastic. But then I would think that, because I have a koa top on my Warmoth Soloist. If you get a really nice piece, it might even be worth just finishing clear, it looks so damn good. Sadly, I hear the flamed/curly stuff is very hard to come by these days, but that may have changed since I ordered it. Anyway, here's a quick pic of mine:

Warpigs.

The curly stuff is not so much hard to come by as it is expensive.  But, the again, scarcity does drive up price - as does demand.  The curly Koa is what i would be aiming for, it is just so stunning.  there are few other woods that are as breathtaking as curly Koa.  By the way, i quite like that guitar, it has an understated awesomeness.

Koa only comes from one relatively small place so supplies are always going to be limited and the flamed wood is always going to be most sought after - those bloody ukelele makers want all the stuff and are much closer to get first dibs

Related woods do exists elsewhere though - autralian blackwood for instance.  The wood varies quite a lot in appearance like all woods but some blackwood is very, very similar to koa

Thanks man. I was going for the understated thing with it. It's not so understated plugged in though - the pickups are Warpigs!!
