HEAVENLY SWORD Demo for PS3! (Playtest Review)
« on: July 28, 2007, 01:11:00 PM »
On Thursday night I downloaded the free demo levels for the upcoming game Heavenly Sword for PS3. Now that I've played through it a couple of times, I can share my impressions:

The demo is 996MB and is only about half of one level, split over two fighting environments. In the demo you have about 15-20 different combos available to you based off of which stance you choose: Speed, Power, Ranged, or Aeriel.

Aside from a small frame rate issue (reminded me of the same frame rate issue I saw in Shadow Of The Colossus), the game looks like it is going to be a winner. In 1080i the colour resolution, shadow detail, and edges are much improved, but there is still a bit of hash. This could be because this is just a demo and the video is still compressed to save space.

The gameplay itself looks as good as any FMV from a PS2 game.

My impressions of the game are (from a 1-10)

PRESENTATION: 9
The environment for the demo level is immersive and highly detailed.

GRAPHICS: 9
Marred only by the small frame rate issue, the colours are stunning, skeletal animation is amazing, artistic design is great, and facial design is top notch.

SOUND: 9
Great mix, terrific music, and great sound effects. What little voice acting there is on the demo is also very well performed.

GAMEPLAY: 10
NOT an 'X masher' of a game, the combat system is incredibly deep and will probably raise the bar for fighting games hereafter. The combos are reactive and the enemies actually defend themselves against your attacks. You can pick up dropped shields, swords, and even common items like barrels, chairs, and tables, and use them against your enemies.

Update:

After you complete the demo for the first time, new combos are unlocked! Some of the combos are in flo-mo ...

Dont forget MGS4   The gameplay footage is simply amazing. That game will shift consoles.

It seems to me as if the ps3 has finally started getting decent games out, or at least are on the verge of being released. I was worried when it first came out. Hardly any good games and the huge price tag, made me think the xbox might actually come top. Now however its wide open, and that blockbusters will only be stocking blu-ray.....muhahahahaha.........ha

It will, but which one? Now that Sony doesn't have MGS as an exclusive any longer ...

Have you seen the massive MGS4 gameplay walkthrough? It bored me to tears! Then again, I'm not a fan of stealth games.

It's amazing how short eveyrone's memory is, or how young they are. :)

The same thing was said about PS2 when it first launched. And there are still many titles being released on that platform. But I agree with you on one point -- PS3's star has just begun to ascend. In the next couple of months there is a slew of great must-have titles coming out. The technology involved in the PS3 is huge and the studios still have to catch up.

Anyone who already owns a PS3 is what I would consider an early adopter. And all early adopters are used to the early glitches and long wait times. The waiting comes with the territory. We knew PS3 would come into its own, and it will. Heavenly Sword, White Knight Story, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XII redux, Lair, Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero 3, GTA 4, Jericho, Uncharted, Mercenary, and a host of other titles being released in 2007 will establish the PS3 for what it is -- the Jaguar of gaming systems!!

There was rumours about it going on the 360 but, there's no confirmed statement that it is going to be as far as I know, but I could be wrong.
It wouldn't surprise me if it finally did end up on the 360 but MGS2 didnt sell all that well on the xbox and mgs3 was never out for it.

Anyway.

Are you gonna get that Rock Star game? The one that has the Drum kits and everything. It looks immense, Guitar hero was brilliant and im away to get the rocking in the 80's disc. Just hope that the cost of it is reasonable.

I'm undecided. I have a real band with real instruments to play, so the game looks pretty silly to me. I seem to remember a $150 USD price tag for the instruments, however.
