My friend is looking for a new amp... suggestions?
« on: July 30, 2007, 10:57:05 PM »
Alright, my friend would like to buy a new amp and I'm pretty much clueless

his price range is about 600 euros
and he plays mostly high-gain Metal, but clean are also pretty important, and it wouldn't hurt if the in-between sounds would be good too
so he'd rather have a multi channel amp

I was thinking some Laney perhaps? PDT_027

what's he most willing to sacrifice?

a randall rg50 tc might be worth a look, but the in-between sounds aren't that great in my opinion...

Something like an engl screamer or laney tt combo would be nice too, but that's more like 1000 euro...

unless a modeller?

he liked that Randall but is open for more suggestions
and he'd rather have a tube (or some good SS) than a modeller

the screamer and stuff are unfortunately too expensive for him

thanks for the suggestions Dave!

To be honest, there isn't a good high gain amp in this price range [that i know of]. If you want the gain you gotta cough up the cash i'm afraid. There is obviously solid state, hybrid, and modelling options, or low-powered valve options that could be boosted, but all of these are a compromise. It's worth just saving up and getting the ENGL powerball you know you really want...

it's for my friend, I already got my high-gain needs fulfilled with a Framus Cobra

but he really got a cr@ppy started ibanez amp and guitar so he desperately needs a new amplifier, so compromise is better than nothing

Tell him to save up for a laney GH50L and a Blackstar DistX pedal. I play in a tech metal band and that combination + drop-A tuned Ibanez + Bareknuckle Nailbomb = PAAAAAAAIIIIN.

But in a good way.

^ yeah, i never really got why you have to pay so much more for high gain. IMO once you get past a point, commonly referred to as "mid-gain", all tone goes to shite anyways!

I tried the 1x12 a few weeks ago, good for the price I thought, the tone wasn't super clear but it was decent (I don't have magic golden ears though)

I wanna know what a valveking would sound like with vintage 30s
