What is it about les pauls?

I always knew that when i got a les paul, i'd slow down, stop trying to be a shredder which i clearly aint and start doing proper blues/classic rock stuff... dont know why, but i did.

And, damnit, i was right! my flatmate was getting seriously pissed off with my shredding on the RG 550, and now my styles have changed instantly, why oh why does a different instrument do this to me?

Am i just conforming, or does the les paul really have that kind of strong vibe to it? and maybe the super strat has the same effect?

Heck, i'm even listening to more classic rock than i used to...

I'm so glad i've got one now, playing wise, this is my home :)

Has anyone else had a similar effect on them when getting a les paul/SG etc?

I started on a Epi Lp and then got my Gibson LP Studio so I don't know :lol:  I do notice when I try superstrats in shops I tend to play faster though! Teh SOUL of teh guitarrz speak to you!!

It's normal.  When I swap guitars at home:

* SG - 'DC, some blues sometimes but mainly 'DC
* Ibanez RG/Jackson Dinky - 80s hard rock, metal, try tapping and fail miserably...
* Les Paul - 70s rock, blues, bit of everything
* Strat - SRV, Hendrix

That's just how the gutars make me want to play, and vice versa.  If I'm in a metal mood I grab an RG etc.

However, at the moment I'm using my Love Rock Relic for everything as I'm loving it so much!

saw Gary Moore on video once, he had a Les Paul and an Explorer.  he said the same thing, on the Explorer his shredding personality comes out, but when he picks up the Les Paul everything slows down!  then you hear him on a strat and it's like Hendrix on steroids!!

If anything I play faster on my LP. The small scale and the fact that I learned to play on it helps speed me up.

wehn i pick up my les paul i play testament/exodus/sanctity/metallica/megadeth

when i pick up my v i play punk :S


im just wrong in the head i guess, then again my les paul is rather brutal sounding

+1 - There's no way I can play as fast on my RG as I can on my Viper - Maybe my Viper does scream metal - But scale length if everything.

I actually learnt how to play mostly on a Esp Viper, same scale length?

When i picked up my les paul my fingers felt at home, thats probably why...

I've started playing fast and i'm definately as fast as i was on the ibanez but, i dont feel like just playing fast all the time anymore :D

not shred but i used to play a lot of stuff in d standard and drop c on my acoustic

nice mellow stuff.

ok well being honest, i do drop my acoustic down half a step or a step so i can sing in tune when i feel like it. but mostly leave it in open C for the john butler effect :D

I would agree that certain guitars can influence the way you play.  My Les Paul has be playing blues & classic rock instantly.  My Tele has be playing spiky punk riffs in standard tuning and every Stones riff I know when in open G.  My Explorer has a nice 'easy' action, it's metal time with that guitar.
