Does anyone on here like it? I know with got metal heads, hard rockers, 80's power rockers etc, but not many people checking into the country rock? No Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown fans? Lucinda Williams? Steve Earl? ...anyone?

Have listened a bit to Steve Earle in the past, but have a better liking for some Gram Parsons & the Flying Burretto Brothers. But thats mostly by way of the Byrds to be honest.

I loke a lot of American folk music though, especially Bluegrass, damn that reminds me that Hayseed Dixie are playing on the 9th and I'm stuck in london <Grrrr>

Unfortunitely it's too hard to play (for me anyway)

yep, into all that stuff and also... Wilco, Golden Smog, Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, Jesse Malin and of course you can't go wrong with Gram either.

I like a bit of Gram Parsons myself, and I'm also partial to Neko Case, Tarnation, Giant Sand, Boxharp and Calexico. I'm never sure which bands count as "Americana", or "alt-country", or whatever other categories exist.

A big +1 here for Steve Earle. Also like Nickel Creek, Ryan Adams, Jerry Reed, Kasey Chambers, Old Crow Medicine Show and of course, Johnny Cash.

I should have included Gram...I can't survive without listening to Grevious angel at least once a week! Mecca you made a good point as well, I don't even think some of the artists themselves know whether they're 'alt-country' & which are 'Americana'! Some of the playing isn't amazing in a 1000 notes a minute, but boy can it move you!

Pretty much the dominant flavour of my musical intake over the past 4 years.

Gram Parsons in all his various incarnations (solo with the Fallen Angels, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds, International Submarine Band)

Ryan Adams is soemthign of a musical hero of mine, fantastic songwriter.

Neko Case has a voice to fall in love with.

Then of course there's:

Steve Earle (been covering Copperhead Road live recently), Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, Jayhawks (can be a little patchy though), Johnny Cash, Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show, Loomer, Calexico, Jesse Malin (saw live 4 times, and chatted over a mineral water, he's a very nice man), My Morning Jacket, Neil Young (obviously), Willard Grant Conspiracy, Richmond Fontaine, Smog, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Rykarda Parasol, The National, Mazzy Star, Justin Rutledge, Jeff Klein, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield,.

rahnooo,

I would also suggest looking up some of the so called Paisley Underground bands (from the early 80s) such as the Long Ryders (try Syd Griffin http://www.sidgriffin.com/), Green on Red, Dream Syndicate & the Rain Parade would count as Americana

In fact looking at your list David Roback (of Mazzy Star) was a member of The Rain Parade

anything with DAvid Grissom playing is killer-just check out his website-his tone(TONE) is the BEST I have heard in terms of "Americana" tone-I drop by the website just to listen to the music playing in the background

-for a very regional taste(deep south Alabama...can be a scary place,mates!)..check out Jason Isbell and cd "Sirens of the Ditch"...a young Neil Young type and ...one of the coolest names in rock..the Drive By Truckers-!excellent choice is "Southern Rock Opera-"they capture the "duality" of the south and chronicle the last days of Lynyrd Skynyrd(songs like "Shut your Mouth/Get your Ass on the Plane" and "Angels and Fuselage"....very unique indeed)
-Shaman-knee deep in Americana
"...major scales...what's that??"- Doug Aldrich
-Rebels,VHII, Mules,Milks,Bombs,and Boogie C+'s!!

Had the good fortune, as a cub, to soundcheck Steve Earle's guitars in the Ulster hall. I'm not usually an acoustic kind of guy, but they were lovely, Nice fella too.
