BK Mini-Humbuckers???
« on: August 16, 2007, 10:12:22 PM »
Anything?

I'm considering buying a Gibby Firebird and I love my BK's and I was wondering if they made any mini-humbuckers?  Perhaps a mini-pig? :)  Something to keep the bright snappy mini tone but with a tight aggressive low-end that's not overly beefed up

I believed that Tim has discontinued minibuckers due to a lack of demand.
You could, of course get your minibuckers rewound though...

Did Tim ever officially offer mini-HBs?  I thought they were special order like the P and J-type bass pickups.  Either way, I'm sure Tim could whip up something to hotrod your guitar.

btw, great decision of the Firebird - love those guitars, should've never sold mine.

Not if the minis are mounted in flat chrome rings in the usual Firebird stylee.

If it was an LP Deluxe you'd be OK, because the mounting rings are just modified P-90 covers (as shown in the pic above).

I'm pretty sure he'll do a rewind - I was talking to Tim about a rewind of a wide-range neck humbucker about a year back but I managed to find an original WR 'bucker instead.

If I had another Firebird I'd be looking to try and shoe-horn some P90s in there instead of the mini-HBs.  Mini's are cool, but P90s RAWK!!!

The mini-hb's that BK did are for the LP deluxe and were mini mules.  They can be fitted into a Firebird mount (I have one and it is in a mounting ring).  They sound a little warmer and fatter than the regular deluxe, and they have the BK open sound when you turn down the volume.  Comparing them to an original Firebird (63) pickup, they are actually very similar, but when you compare them to a newer firebird, the BK wins hands down.  The new firebird has a much more bland and distorted tone.
So many pickups, so little time

Maybe Tim has some mini mules parts laying around, gathering dust, somewhere in the shop. Give him a call.

i asked this about 6 months ago, when i was considering an epi riviera, but apparently it takes so long to change his rig over to wind the mini-HBs it's not worth building them, so he discontinued them... as to whether or not he would build a couple for a favour i personally couldn't say..
