The guy plays the solo about 100 times better than any live EVH version I've seen.  A whole sh!tload better than Slash too.

Amy Winehouse is horrendous in that clip - she's like one of those Japanese cover-band singers who've learned the lyrics phonetically without understanding them.  Except they sing in tune.

But kudos to Charlotte Church - she's really good.  Shame she got caught up in all the wild-child bullsh!t, but - unlike Amy, Britney, Lindsay et al - she's managed to pull herself back from the brink without getting totally $%&#ed up.

I've only ever seen one EVH live version there's only like 1 on youtube, and it was better, but i do agree slash murdered that solo so badly.

More embarrasment, watch Wellers experssion in the 2nd vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtfxfb9Tl6o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WTzhWACsHc

Saw her on TV quite a while ago she was ok (especially for her age), but nothing special (to me). It must be cr@p to be known simply for being wasted.

The beat it solo was a one off, I have the isolated track on a van Halen bootleg (somewhere) and what you hear is a section of a longer solo (I think I also have a couple of alternate takes)

I don't wish to patronise but it's a cover version, not a youtube stalker version, they probably only decided to do Beat It a day or so before, along with a whole bunch of other music for the show.

Personally I'd be incredibly happy with that version if I had played it

Jeniffer Batten dosn't do much better than the guy in that clip and the other versions have heard are mostly worse (thinking about it I would like to hear what Adrian Belew & Allan Holdsworth would make of that solo though)

Rob...

Cue posting of my favourite youtube clip (again) from the days when Eddie was still turning his back while tapping http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1zBYF6PrFk

Live yes i would be happy, but in the studio i wouldn't, it's the first bit of tapping where he only plays half the tapped notes of the original, i am being over critical, i just thought that part was a bit meh compared to the rest.

By the way do you have that EVH long solo? i'd like to hear it if that was possible :D

I'm heading back home tomorrow (15 hours on the scum bus), and I will have a search (hopefully the wife hasn't thrown out my collection).

Damn I wish Eddie would get himself together.

Have you seen the September issue of Guitar World?  He is at least looking a lot better - haircut, gained a few pounds, finally got his teeth fixed.

Unfortunately the "interview" - with Ed and his tech/personal manager Matt Bruck - is nothing more than a sales pitch for the new EVH amps.

^ Have you seen the press conference for the Van Halen Reunion? He looks good there and they have announced a tour, no UK dates yet.

Diamond Dave says that they could have half arsed it but they didn't want to, that's why they waited after they first announced it and why EVH went to rehab. They then went on to say that this is no a one off and that they are a new band and it will lead to news albums etc.

Edit - here it is: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/678441/Van_Halen__Diamond_Dave_Are_Back.html

Yeah, I watched the press conference.  Ed's like a completely different man than he was in those NAMM clips a few months ago.  But he still seems kind of frail and... remote.

Roth's ever the showman though!  :D

Haha yeah DLR chats so much cr@p in that press conference he can't shut up! But hopefully that gives us a taste of what he will be like on stage :D
They all look in great shape and it's great to see.
I'm interested to hear Wolfgang playing bass and to hear this "deep rhythmic sense" and groove that he has.

Oh come on Joe I thought the bloke did the solo alright, I couldn't have done it better, perhaps you can though!  :P

Ms Winehouse on the other hand was dreadful, which is a shame as I've seen and hear her signing much better than that.

+1

I was expecting the guitarist to be really bad , but he pretty much nailed the solo (tone wasnt EVH but wasnt bad)

Amy (dead by Xmas ) Winehouse was pretty awful

The solo was fine imo.

He's a good player - Clearly not a super expierienced tapper though.

+1 - I think Joe you're being a little over critical for a live TV performance.

he only does half the tappy bits at the start of the solo which makes it sound a bit lame
