suggestions for new bare knuckles??
« on: August 21, 2007, 06:53:35 PM »
hey guys, im looking to get myself a new set of bare knuckles and im wondering what you guys recommend. its hard to describe what kind of sound im looking for, i guess i like that 80's hot rodded lead tone of players like van halen but with my rhythm i need a more powerful sound ala zakk wylde etc, hope that kind of gives you an idea.

They will be going in a Dean Time capsule V played through a 50 watt marshall JCM2000 head, the only fx i use come from a boss gt8 but i rarely use the amp modeling functions as i prefer to use the distortion from the amp.

any suggestions of what works in v's and which might get me those type of sounds?

nailbomb, miracle man, holy diver, cold sweat, painkiller...
almost all pickups in the contemporary line will do these sounds

be a little more specific
what characteristics do you like in a pickup?
do have any magnet preference?
or EQ?
or even some other brands examples
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Quote from: Tim
I was fortunate enough to test a Vee make by a fantastic new luthier called Jo Case(www.caseguitars.com)at the London Guitar Show this year and it was loaded with Rebel Yell humbuckers-serious tone and near enough the same as Steve's demo.
Normally I always suggest Mules or even Stormy Monday humbuckers for Vees as they seem to work well translating the string vibration which can get lost with those huge wings of timber behind the bridge. However after playing Jon's Vee I'm happy to report the RYs work really well and their voicing is significantly different enough to sit really well with a Crawler set in a LP-together they'll sound enormous!

A quote from Tim in another thread about V's

Although I do not possess Miracle Man's, they are very Zakk-ish, also heard it comparable to Dokken's last album of the 80s which I get the feeling is 'under lock and key'

True.

Close. I'm the one that said it. It's Back For The Attack, which is Dokken's last STUDIO album of the 80s, but the MM will capture all of the tones on the first 4 albums, depending on amp, guitar materials, and chops. PDT_008

Miracle Man or Holy Diver.

MM is more precise and sharper, Diver dark and warm..

cheers guys, I should have added i use a miracle man at the moment and i love it, nails the rhythm tone i want, as it does with my lead but im wondering if there is a more suitable pickup for the lead tone im after. Its that van halen, thick, warm, snarling mids sound i want, quite vintage sounding. thats about as best as i can describe it, which may well be rubbish

for raw metal rhythms i preferred my miracle man in my ex-rectifier, cause it takes off that spongy bass
but with my peavey rockmaster the holy diver smokes it even in metal tones
the leads are a lot more organic and sweet than the MM, but still hot
probably it would work really fine with your jcm2000, but i never tried it in a marshall
a nailbomb would be nice too
or maybe the legendary ancient alnico miracle man

I'd actually suggest a Ceramic Holy Diver. It has that 80's flavour but has the capacity to do the 'zakk' thing.

thanks for the replies, with regards to the holy diver, does anyone have any experience with them in V shaped guitars? from the post from tim i know the mules work well and was considering trying them out, but what about the holy divers?

works great in my les paul
in a V it may sound a bit darker, but bright enough (especially through a marshall)
i think the nailbomb may have a bit more treble edge
but you can always ask tim to wind a custom pickup

i think thats a good idea. if you're going the contemporary route, i'm pretty sure Tim suggested ceramics. The miracle man in my opinion wasn't the greatest choice for a V, i myself have one.
