The telecaster, whilst a fantastic instrument in it's own right, will never be as recognised as the stratocaster purely because of the period in the late 60s and 70's when they were played by every guitar hero worth his salt. The same goes for the LP. The only prevalent users of the SG that immediately spring to mind are Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Carlos Santana and Frank Zappa (Frank later changed to a hotrodded strat though.). A great many talented guitarists have used them over the years and there was a point where I truly considered the SG to be the coolest instrument ever. The SG is technically still a LP, or at least it's unappreciated teenage pregnancy, but Les actually hated them and so his name was removed. Coupled with the reliability issues inherent in the design meant that it remained relatively obscure compared to it's parent guitar, the LP.

Pretty much every guitarist that played a Les Paul also played an SG.

ie, Jimmy Page..

And pretty much every guitarist that played a Strat also played an SG.

ie, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix.

yeah but are those the names that you immediately think of when the instrument is mentioned.
Clapton's 'The Fool' was used only as a stand in for his Les Paul, which was stolen, I think (feel free to correct me on this). Jimi only really used the SG quite rarely compared to his strats and V and I have never come across Jimmy Page playing an SG unless you count the EDN-43chickencluck (whatever the model is) which is not really an SG. It was a double necked semi-hollowbody guitar like an extension of the ES line but it was too heavy so they went for the SGish shape.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

HTH - that's the SG I was on about...

Looks gorgeous eh, those pickups will be T-Tops though - I'd change 'em out for Riff Raffs.  At todays £/$ rates that's a '67 SG std for under a grand, just insane.

We're gonna have to stop this, I'm almost talking myself into it and thinking how much I have on my credit card (bad HTH!!! bad HTH!!!)

Sorry to break up the flow here, but what got me from the 52 Tele page was this little gem - "Original HSC & strap included (we're working on the orig. reciept)" - which makes it sound just a little like they're in the back room cooking up a fake one.

I'm sure we all know what they mean, but it sure could have been phrased better!

I like Cowtown guitars - they sold me my 1960 Les Paul Special for $500 in 1993!  I guess they're trying to make the money back now  :D
So many pickups, so little time

They're a cool shop eh Phil! I bought a couple of Hbe pedals in there last year and told them about Bkp's, seem like they're a dealer now too.
