How do I wire my new Nailbomb?(PRS Custom 22)
« on: August 30, 2007, 11:22:41 PM »
I just got a nailbomb and am having some issues wiring it up. My PRS has a 5 position adjuster knob rather than a toggle switch. I have the hot and ground where they should be on the circuit board but I think I may have the white and green wires installed incorrectly. I have both of them twisted together and soldered into the spot where the old PRS Dragon II's red wire was...as the red wire is the split on PRS Dragons

I must have something wrong here as the bridge position alone sounds awesome...but the rest of the positions (aside from the neck p/u alone) sound very thin and out of character (ie the bassiest combo now sounds thin)

Somebody help!

I'm not sure if this is the problem, but for the PRS wiring to work properly the pickups need to be magnetically out of phase with each other (if wired in "normal" 2 humbuckers in parallel mode, which isn't an option on the PRS rotary switch, AFAIK).

If you order a pair of BKPs for a PRS, I believe Tim normally flips the magnet in the neck pickup.

You could try swapping the connections of the red and black wires of the Nailbomb, as that will change which coil of the pickup is switched off in each "split" position.  But I think you'd also need to turn the pickup itself "upside down" for everything to work correctly.

Or I could be on completely the wrong track.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I think the problem is that the original PRS Dragon 2 has such a lower output that all the "mix" settings are overpowered by the nailbomb. I see a new neck pickup in my future hehe

If the sound is thin when the two pups are mixed but sounds ok when either one is selected alone then it sounds as if you have them wired out of phase.
This can be desirable in some settings.especially if you have independant tone and volume controls  for bridge and neck pups and a switch for phase changing, otherwise switch the red and black wires for in phase pups and a full bodied sound.

Well, I flipped the blk and red wires and the mixed coil settings do sound fuller. Now I miss the sound of the middle two coils out of phase. I may have to get a push pull pot. The nailbomb sounds great though. Far better than the PRS Dragon IIs which had lots of high mids(great for artificial harmonics) but floppy low end. The Nailbomb is more balanced across the frequency spectrum and has better string definition. ie when I play a minor 7 chord with lots of gain I can hear each note. With the PRS pickups, that just sounded like mush.
