It's just the way the initial part of the amp circuit is wired.  The alternative is split cathode, which is how the late 60s Super Leads were done.  They have a bit more treble and crunch, and sound like they have a bit more gain because of it.

After playing for years on my bluesbreaker RI'89, having lend the old plexi of a friend of mine, tried way to much to remember, the greatest 'plexi like' amp i have used is a original jcm800. I dont believe that there is anything that offers this tone and versatility, and still they arent that hard to find for just the amount of cash a new copy-plexi would cost. Watch out for modded ones though.

Hey guys !   Sorry to butt in on this conversation. I was cruising the www this morning (as you do) looking for Jtm45 info, as I have been wanting one, but just couldn't decide between a Ceriatone and one of the Marshall RI's. The Ceriatone is almost certaily a better amp but I was nervous about getting it shipped from Malaysia (or wherever they are), and the lack of aftersales support.
Anyway, I came upon this thread - wowsers !  I became very interested.
After a couple of emails to Martin at martamps I was very, very interested. I couldn't believe he could produce the amp at the price point that he does. He sure can't make too much money out of it at the moment. Anyway, Martin seems like a top guy. And the long and the short of it is that I ordered a Jtm45 like Twinfan's, with Power scaling !!! All hand-wired, brand new, all for the sum of £730. I am almost wetting myself in anticipation.
I can't believe that eventually I'm going to get the "amp of my dreams" (cheesy though it sounds).

Anyway, I've got pretty reasonable recording gear, so when it arrives (Nov sometime), I'll defo be putting up some clips ("Back in Black" is likely to feature !).

Alan

For anyone that's interested (apart from Alan of course  ;)) his JTM45 is all built up and ready to go.  Final shakedown tests were performed last night and it's looking and sounding good.  Alan's taking delivery tomorrow  :D

Both Alan's and my amp sounded identical through the same cab, which is good news for those interested in Martamps consistency.

I've also managed to convert Martin himself to my way of thinking.  As he said last night - "The JTM45 is just the perfect amp".

:D

TF,
I am physically dribbling at the thought of finally getting my hands on the amp and cab tommorow. I hear you gave it a good blasting yesterday !!
The "meet" is all arranged with Martin. He's been a top bloke throughout the whole thing.
I'd really like to have heard it through your cab too. I gather it was a fair bit brighter than my new G12-65 Martamp cab. I've got a G12H anniversary I will certainly try instead of one of the 65's at some point. The highs and lows of the "H", with the mids of the 65 might just prove to be a winning combo. As always with speakers, it'll be a case of just trying various ones until I get a match with the amp that I'm happy with. I just thought I'd start off with G12-65's this time as I haven't used them before.

I'll keep you all updated.

Alan

Yeah, my cab was brighter (1936 Marshall 2x12 with V30/G12H Anniversary mix) and I preferred it.  But then I would, wouldn't I?  ;)

I'm expecting pics and a review sometime tomorrow  :)

Right, I picked up the Martamp Jtm45 and cab from Martin today. Here she is :-

I can't even play it yet as my wife is asleep upstairs, so I'm resigned to just looking at it for a while.

You've got power scaling Alan - keep it low and you can play it  ;)

It sounded good even at whisper levels......
