pro modeling preamps (tech21 sansamp psa, digitech gsp1101)

just discovered these things, I'm not sure if they are tube or solidstate but I was wondering if you guys knew anything about them and if they were any good and how they compared to ordinary tube based preamps, apparently with the tech21 sansamp psa can sound like any amp out there!!! (if you know how to tweak all the knobs)

just kind of curious (and slightly drunk right now)

I use a Roland VG-88 which is a solid state modeling preamp. Depending on how you use it, it's both a great guitar preamp and amp modeler. It has a fantastic amount of versatility. Its expensive, but I feel you get what you pay for in this unit.

I don't know enough about the Vox, Line 6, et al to pass comment.

THe tech 21 is solid state and I think it does a better job ahan anything by line6.

Iv'e also heard them used live a good few times and was very impressed

I have a sansamp GT2 and I used it last weekend at a gig for the first time in years and I was reminded of just how good it is. I think the emulations are pretty good.I stuck it in front of my Laney VC30 (which I like the raw tone of) but dialed in a Fender type tone and it worked extremely well. It is, as Rob says, a solid state unit but rugged and reliable as well as, in my experience, not too heavy on the batteries.
