need a cab...
« on: September 09, 2007, 03:42:28 AM »
After talking myself into thinking I needed a low watt amp for recording when I go back to uni, as their finally letting us in the proper studio. I went out today to try out a couple, and managed to buy both :P : A new Fender Champion 600 (The 5 watt one with the 6" speaker) which has the most absolutely beautiful clean sound I've possibly ever heard and an Orange Tiny Terror (15 watt little beast) loving the awesome raw yet clear overdriven vibe from this thing although it cleans up great too.

Problem is I don't have a cab for the TT , and don't know much about them so how about some recommendations after I finally got my first proper Valve amps. I was thinking along the lines of an either 1x12 or a 2x12 or possibly even a 2 or 4 x 10.

cheers for any help  :D  much appreciated

The tiny sounds good with any good cab, but from all I tried (Vintage 30, G12H30, G12M25, G12-65) I like the Rola G12-65 best. It's in a Marshall JCM800 1x12 cab that I got for 100 EUR.

You can get the speaker again as a reissue for 72 GBP at www.hotroxuk.com (a very reasonable price compared to some other dealers).

Check the tiny through the G12-65:

I'm using mine through two 2x12s - one with G12H30s and one with Vintage 30s.  Sounds great!

If you're just using it for recording, I'd get a simple 1x12 with the speaker of your preference.

If you're recording I'd go for a 2x12 with one alnico speaker and one ceramic speaker.

I'd go with a Jensen P12Q and a Celestion G12H-30.  If you're not into Jensens, go with a Celestion Alnico Blue/Gold instead.

You'll get a nice range of tones with that rig.

Cheers guys.

Definitely liking the idea of the Celestion Blue and gold because there a similar speaker but with a different wattage so the headroom will differ creating a nice clarity in the gold and more of a breakup in the blue which is great for recording I know. I've never really tried jensons before so I don't really know the characteristics.

or ....if I kinda of mix up what twinfan said and use a combination of both a G12H-30 and a Vintage 30 in a 2 x 12 that might give me an interesting mix.

oh and what about the cab itself? Any preferences on that, I  liked the orange I tried it out on and its nice to know they have a good coupling system to improve the definition but I probably end up buying an auralex gramma pad: http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/2334
If they work aswell as the mopads for studio systems then I'm definetely getting some, supposed to reduce low end resonation.

btw I quite like what you did with your TT hunter, taking the cover off makes it kinda cool, quirky and retro.[/url]

Are the TTs actually quiet enough to use at low volume or not? I was thinking about asking for one and a 1x12 for xmas to use in halls at uni but I'm guessing itl be too loud even with a low sensitivity speaker like the greenback?

Award Session make great 1x12, 1x15 and 2x10 cabs.

You order the cab and the speakers separately, so you can have whatever speaker you want :)

I have a Celestion Classic Lead 80 in mine and it sounds great :)

You can use them quiet-ish Tom, but they do go a bit buzzy.  If I was off to Uni, I'd get a modeller of some sort.  Pocket Pod and headphones I think.

+1

you'll get on everyone's nerves playing amplified guitar in halls at even moderate volume.  that said, you may have neighbours with decks and a huge PA (heh).

nobody NEEDS an amp for home practice - something like the Toneport is perfect.

Great cabs.  I have a 2x10 Celestion one I use live with my Fender Champ.

What about this? : http://www.thdelectronics.com/product_page_212speaker.html

I'm not sure about the speakers though contains one each of both of these: http://www.shopatron.com/index/571.0.24501.0.0.0.0

It seems to be highly praised and there's one at a store near me so I can go try it soon hopefully.

oh btw I stumbled across these whilst I was at it: http://www.thdelectronics.com/product_page_yellowjacket.html

They're supposed to let you be able to change the valves without modding your amp, thought they might be useful for  someone
