Best pickups for funky HSS strat?
« on: September 09, 2007, 08:34:35 AM »
Hi everyone, I'm Steve and this is my first post.

I'm a bassist for most of the time but I'm doing a little home recording and I managed to pick this 1987 Chandler Custom Strat up off ebay for some funky strat sounds.

The finish isn't to my taste, but the spec is pretty good and I was stunned to see that the body is a solid 2 piece of quilted maple!  The pickups are dimarzio's, the bridge is apparently by wilkinson (although I'd prefer a Floyd Rose myself) and the tuners are sperzel locking.

The pickups are OK I guess but I was wondering if Bareknuckle do anything that would be better for the music I'm recording.  I'd also like the HB to be coil split because there are times when only a SC bridge sound works for some of the solo stuff.  Mostly I'll be playing skanky Nile Rogers type chords but it would be good to wail a bit on the humbucker as well.

I'd also prefer the pickup covers to be in white - eventually I'll get Chandlers to refinish the neck back to natural maple and get a custom car painter friend to refin the body in something like a cyanburst.

So I figured the white, chrome and blue combo would look pretty cool.

Any suggestions as to which HSS set might work best?  I was looking at the Crawler/Mothers Milk combo initially.

For single coils I think either the Mothers Milk or perhaps the apaches would be in the right ballpark.

Dunno about the humbucker though.

Cyanburst hmmm interesting.

I was thinking Apache's but I regret that  cannot advise re humbuckers as I do not possess a humbucker guitar ( yet ). I think, though, that I'd go for something fairly old school and lower output to match the Apaches. Welcome to the form btw .

Thanks for the welcome guys, I'm off to band practice this afternoon and the guitarist has a stock 80's squier strat which I might just A/B with mine.  His has an alder body and my feeling is that I might need something a little fatter sounding in the single coils because the maple body in my guitar might be a little on the bright side.  Thats why my initial thoughts were with the Mothers Milk SC's.

I'm just putting an A2 Mule and 2 Sultans into a strat for a Dire Straits/Richard Thompson sound.  I'm sure that they would do Nile Rogers great, and I also know that you can wail on the Mule, as I already have a set in another guitar.

The strat I am putting them into has a basswood body with a birdseye maple neck with an ebony fingerboard.
So many pickups, so little time
