Help! Songs to play on an acoustic for a wedding?
« on: September 10, 2007, 11:43:08 AM »
A mate of mine has asked me if I'll play a few songs on an acoustic during the signing of the register at his wedding in November.  I'm honoured but cacking myself as I've never played solo for an audience

Any ideas on tunes I can suggest to him?  So far I've suggested:

* Blackbird - The Beatles (cracking tune)
* Stairway to Heaven - Led Zep (nice long gap filler ;))

Both of those are well known, which is good (or is that bad?)  He suggested Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton but it's a bit morbid for a wedding???

Please, please guys help me out.  What's fairly easy to play that would go down well in this situation??????

More Than Words by Extreme (sickly, I know, but it'd work)
To Be With You by Mr Big.
Maybe you could find an arrangement of (retch) Angels by Robbie Williams... although I think it gets played more at funerals than weddings, I don't know what the hell the lyrics are about.
Even worse... [cough] You're Beautiful by James Blunt [/cough].

I don't think Stairway is going to work - too long for a start.

Do you have to sing as well, Dave, or does it need to work as an instrumental?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Me?  Sing?  What are you trying to do to me?  It's bad enough just playing!!!!!

They'll need to be instrumentals.  Couple of good suggestions there Phil.

That Extreme track's got me thinking.  I've got the tab somewhere for a Nuno version of "Love of My Life" by Queen.  That could be a good 'un if I can learn it in time???

Played "properly" with the fingerpicky parts wonderful tonight would be excellent. There is a youtube video of him playing it live and the main picky-chord sequence would work a treat.

I despise the song though. Sentimental shitee that my Dad used to sing along with while playing, he can't sing. Dreadful.

Weird!!  :o  I was thinking of that song when I posted above, but I thought it would be a toughie to sing (had you been singing).

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin? Its not an instrumental but its fairly easy to play (unless you're fingerpicking) and sounds more complicated than it is :P How about some Roderigo y Gabriella?

:D Trust me here :  K.I.S.S.  Keep It Simple Stupid !

Play stuff you can relax to whilst playing. Go for all the old cheese as you`ll be playing for various age groups. Make sure all the songs are strummy types as if its to picky you`ll run risks of your nerves helping you to make mistakes & if it starts to sound awfull you`ll just make it worse for yourself.

Song suggestions :  Pretty Flamingo [ G C D ] simple as F**k to play & sing

Wondefull Tonight - G C  D Am again easy to play & sing

Need Your Love So Bad -

you can transpose all of these songs really easily

good luck matey !

God I could do with a Gin & Tonic !

Babe I'm gonna leave you would go down like a led zepplin at a wedding Tom!

What about crazy little thing called love, it's a strummy one, so no sweating over finger picking something like Blackbird, unless your're a demon fingerpicker! Nice tune though.

Personally I'd be inclined to plump for giving out carnations for button holes!

You Shook Me All Night Long

I have a wonderfull accoustic version of it on a bootleg CD. AC/DC was playing it in a radio studio after an interview. Hilarious!
