brown sugar neck cover removal-huge improvement in tone
« on: September 10, 2007, 04:12:56 PM »
Hi
new user here.
I recently bought a brown sugar neck with gold cover to add to a warmoth tele with fralin blues special bridge.
I found it far too warm, and lacking in volume and I phoned tim, panicking slightly!!
He explained to me just how much the cover affects the pickup tone, and   offered to remove it for me - and did so in double quick time for no charge. All I can say is what a difference! chalk & cheese - Its like a really nice start pickup - full bodied tone, but with plenty of highs, and the volume improvement is such that i had to drop it right down to balance with the fralin bridge!
What i heard originally as rather a muddy muffled sound is still available at a twist of the tone knob, but at a decent volume level!
Id like to thank Tim for great service, and a great product - i feel im hearing the pickup now as its supposed to sound, and to everyone out there who loves the look of the neck pickup cover, id say leave it off, youre losing so much tone and volume its unbelievable!

Welcome, Mr loco PDT_008

Thanx for that review. Not too many Tele guys report back after they buy!

Welcome and thanks for the feedback.

I'd like to add that this neck was covered in a gold cover which dated back to before we were making our own covers and the plating on it was extremely thick. Our new covers are flat top just like the original '50s Teles and sonically much more transparent.
If you're after a really transparent and clean Tele neck the new Blackguard Flat 50 is simply awesome-based on a '52 spec, DC5.1K Alnico V it's crystal clear(with a cover too) yet balances well with the bridge too.
