Author Topic: Anyone using Low Resonance Heritage G12H30s??? (Read 2258 times)

I'm looking to swap two of the V30s in my 4x12 for G12Hs and I'm wondering whether to get the low resonance (55Hz) Heritage versions. I've got a couple of the regular 75Hz versions in a 2x12 and I like them, but I'm wondering if I'd like the Heritage ones even better?

Anyone tried both or can offer an opinion???

I believe the lower resonance G12H was the one used in the original Orange cabs and the Marshall bass cab. The speaker was designed for bass which is why it has the lower resonant frequency. It was used by a lot of guitarists though because it gave a cleaner bottom end over the 75hz.

If I was putting a G12H in a cab it is the one I would go for, but then I put the heritage G12M in my miniMat cab! I think with the V30 it will be a good match, unless you want more bass 'growl', in which case the 75hz will do that.

Thanks Phil. It would be used with a JTM45 running KT66s (or a Super Bass running EL34s), and I'm after a good all round Angus tone (obviously!). I guess I'm a little concerned that the JTM45 and Super Bass with a 4x12 will have plenty of low end anyway, and the 55hz cones might be too much?

Do you think V30s (75hz) and G12H Anniversarys (75hz) combination would be best?

Or V30s (75hz) and G12H Heritage (55hz)?

I've got original G12H-30s with 55Hz bass cones in my 4x12 and they're not drastically different to the standard version. The cones are just a little tougher to cope with the wider excursion from bass amps.

I reality what you get is a smoother top end, but you will still have plenty of bite - I'm using mine with a Superbass too.

I recorded some clips with this rig a while back (they're in the players section) if you want to hear how they sound.

If it were me mixing some G12H's with V30s I'd go with the 55Hz version since you already have more than enough 'cut' with those V30s. I'd load the V30s in the bottom and the G12Hs in the top because I don't like x-patterning speakers in 4x12s.

because even if you get speakers with the same sensitivity, the different EQ of the speakers will cause you to 'hear' one more than the other. I think X-patterning makes the 4x12 loose focus and punch.

£120 ain't a bad price for a pair at all. btw, I have a pair of creamback G12M-25s with 55Hz cones that are up for grabs - anyone?

Cheers HTH. With top/bottom split I'm guessing your hear the top speakers more than the bottoms though if they both have equal dB ratings? V30s and G12Hs are both 100dB, so I'm going to try the X-pattern first. I don't want to lose out on the V30 punch by only having it blasting away at my legs!

Yep, you'll hear the top speakers more but the V30s have a natural EQ such that I think you'd still hear them with both on the bottom.

Try it both ways, it's not a big deal to change the wiring round. Keep it at 16ohms too, sounds (subjectively) better than 4ohms.

Don't worry - I always run all my heads/cabs at 16ohms ;)

Slight hassle with the Heritage speakers is that they're solder tags not push-ons. Makes swapping speakers around a bit more involved.

Only ordered the Heritages this morning and they should be with me tomorrow - how good is that????

Speakers arrived this afternoon, they're all fitted up in an X-pattern and I've just been breaking them in gently.

I'm loving the tone from the cab now - the mix of speakers really works for me. Bite and cut from the V30s and syrupy beefiness from the G12Hs.

Can't wait to try the JTM45 through it on Sunday :twisted:
