MQ & humbucker combo -- out of phase??
« on: September 12, 2007, 09:09:18 PM »
Just finished installing a MQ in the neck of my axe.  Left the stock humbucker pickup at the bridge.  MQ sounds great of course, but the combination setting (selecter switch in the middle) of the MQ and the 'bucker gives a very cutting, half-c--ked wah sort of sound.  Lots of treble, very little bass... even less bass than just the pure bridge setting!

Did I goof and install the MQ upside down?  Or something with the wiring?  Halp!!

Doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, you just get this when you mix manufacturers.

If your MQ is a four conducter type you'll have to reverse the phase.

If it's braided wire you'll have to reverse the phase on your bridge pickup.

If they're BOTH braided wire you'll have to flip the magnet on one of them or live with the phasey Peter Green tone.

MQ's a braided wire because its a single coil so you will have to see if you can flip the bridge pickup wires - quite usual when mixing pickups as HTH says
