I've just had a set of apaches fitted in my Strat (courtesy of Jonathan at Feline). It seems these are somewhat under represented on this forum so here's a clip of me playing a bit of Hard To Handle by the Black Crows.

Equipment is:

US Strat with BK Apaches straight into Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

Rhythm part is neck pickup into clean channel with amp volume at 9 and guitar volume about 7.

Lead part is neck pickup into 'more drive' channel. Amp on 5 with drive at 4 and guitar volume full.

I'm not 100% happy with this clip but it's my first one and I'd welcome any feedback.

Sounds like a classic Strat tone to me! :)

Did you use some kind of load box? I'll be blown through the wall if I set my HRDLX on those volume levels.

I'm using a Hot Plate. Due to complaints from family members I can't have it up higher than -16dB. Unfortunately this means that the speaker isn't working to it's full extent and you don't get the sound of the cabinet in the same way.

Welcome to the forum!

That's a cool sounding clip you have! Lovely tones and great playing too 8)  I love The Black Crowes. I went to see them at The Brixton Academy a few years back.

Do you know anything about the tunings they use?

To be honest I don't know much about them except everything I've ever heard from them sounds great. The only alternate tuning I've flirted with is open G - D,G,D,G,B,D - instant Keith Richards!

why doesnt my HRDx sound that great! I suppose it has something to do with the Hotplate though I guess!

oooooo such a nice clean tone, and the suttle hint of drive was perfect, really nice expressive playing there dude, i just wish it went on longer, could have really relaxed to that   :)

Great clean tone and cool playing.I like the way it thickens up when you dig in for the solo.Good stuff!

My thoughts exactly! I figured it would sound cool with my rockabilly project. Really capturing that sound of a Bassman with everything on twelve. THD Hotplates aren't cheap though :?  :cry: .

Great stuff Gary. I have Apaches too and they are just brilliant. I have a pull pot to give me bridge and neck pups. They are just so ...erm,  musical- yes thats the word.

Yup = nice tone, nice playing - Gotta love the Apache, it sweats classic Strat in all tone: blues, rock, surf - just a great pup.

Someday I'm gonna get me a single-coil-style geetar with which to pursue my Jerry Garcia tone fantasies (after I load up my LP to pursue my planet-destroying tone fantasies ;)) and if it takes t Strat-type pups, I'm thinking the Apaches would be at the top of my list.  (If I go with a Tele-style thing, I'm not sure ... Yardbirds or Country Boys, mebbe ....)

Gotta love that classic Strat tone from the Apaches, though! :)

I can't recommend them highly enough. Yes I know they're not cheap but it lets you use your clean channel for clean or overdrive just by using your guitar's volume control and you get a much livelier overdriven sound than the O/D channel on the HRD. For some reason the 'more drive' option sounds ok for lead. You could sell all your overdrive pedals to pay for it as you probably won't need them any more.

Interestingly the bass player in my covers band commented that I'm getting guitar sounds just like on the originals of the songs we do and the only pedals I use now are a Keeley Compressor and a Boss Chorus! My conclusion is that a good basic tone goes a long way and doesn't need as many artificial enhancements.
