it looks like Gibson are doing re-branded THD hotplates, everything's exactly the same except the finish.  oh, and it probably costs more!

I'd better not tell my mate Rich, he'd have one in a heartbeat.

We've seen a lot of discussion about power scaling, attenuators etc the last few days.

It seems like, after 50 years, manufacturers have suddenly realised it's quite nice to be able to crank an amp at household volume levels.  Duh.  I hope we start seeing some more ultra-low-wattage amps on the market.

so im guessing this will be the THD hotplate but +£££££££££££ due to the Gibson name on it???

Or am I totally overlooking the fact that the Mass-Market appeal of a Gibson rebranded product will significantly lower the price?

Musician's Friend are listing it as $299.95 - $299.99 (I don't know what you get for the additional 4c :? ).

The THD is $299.00 - $339.00.  So pretty much the same.

Seems to cost the same as THD, 299$
http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBTGAFXPA

Since when would Gibson have a believable competence in products like this? Don't understand for what reason they'd wanna extend their portfolio in this direction. The only thing this will do for them is make them lose money ...

Why do you think Gibson will lose money on them? The way I see it, THD have done all the R&D and are already tooled up to produce these things.  Gibson will be having them made by THD with their name on it - this is a proven product so it's hardly a shot in the dark for them.

It reminds me of some of the "innovations" people develop in my company. I can imagine Gibson marketing discussing strategies on how to expand into othe segments and do risk dispersion etc, then they blow marketing money on it and invest a lot in stock and dealer communication.

But let's face it, if it's a THD, same price, same everything, what would you get, the Gibson (which they might stop to make in half a year's time anyway) or the THD, or would you even care?

I would go with the THD because it's known and I am sure it has a good resale value.

Good point, I'm sure THD will be making them for a while to come. If Gibson stop offering them will they be able to offer any kind of repair service? Granted their dealer network is huge compared to THD but I don't know how good they are at helping out with out of production models.

By the way, I saw one of these in a shop over a year ago so they aren't so new 8)
