« on: September 16, 2007, 10:38:46 PM »
fecking chavs, broke into my sisters car in the cinema car park and robbed the stereo, 4 CDs and 20p in coins, they've screw drivered the lock on the left side or something

is it worth claiming on insurance or not?

some people just have to be tw@ts

as for insurance, depends on what its costing per year so far, personally for that much I would rather have the no claims bonus.

If her no claims is protected then go right ahead, she only gets set back a year in earning another year's bonus rather than losing the whole lot and starting over. Offset it with how much it's going to be to repair what they broke and the cost of replacing the stereo.

If only we could fit electrodes to our cars that activate when you lock it....ZAP!!!

This happened to me about 7 years ago - I would advise against claiming.
Roughly the amount that was claimed have a new lock set and stereo fitted was put onto the following years' policy (it was about £300).

Only would've cost about £70 for the locks if I'd have bought and fitted them myself

Plus the little b*stards came along and had second attempt at getting into the boot a few weeks later with the new locks fitted!!!!! The new stereo didn't last too long either.

that sucks, i'm sorry to hear that. as already mentioned just be careful about claiming, if you aren't careful it'll put your premium up by more than what the repair would cost... and they'll probably charge an excess too.

Isn't the insurance industry a f*cking disgrace?

You pay thousands of pounds for years and the minute you actually make a claim they (a) put loads of red tape in your way and (b) make you pay for it anyway by putting up your premiums.

It's virtually fraud.

Yeah it ain't right. They should offset costs with how much business you have already given them.

He he, I work in that industry and that is a common criticism and I think a fair one. Fortunately I can influence our Underwriters when, say, a long standing claim fee policyholder has a claim and I have, on many occasions, argued that an increase is wholly unjustified. There again, I do not do personal lines insurance where customer loyalty is fickle. In commercial insurance, if you underwrite in the good old fashioned way, you can make your money back from a claim by keeping that client in business (i.e. paying the claim swiftly and fairly) and then not stuffing them at renewal-they stay with you and pay premiums and effectively give you the money back. The only thing I would suggest here is that the excess might not apply to a theft claim but a lot depends upon protected no claims bonus.

agreed. way i look at it is that you pay it in the hope you never have to claim (and if you don't, it's cheap at the price)... but it definitely does suck that if you ever do have to claim it's so awkward, and debatable if it's cheaper to just pay yourself.

My bro just had a run in with a badger....well he run it over and buggered his whole front end.

After checking with the insurance company, the cost is going to go up by a whole 20p a year.  So definately worth checking first.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
