Sounds just like I remember from that youtube clip of Ed at Namm - very, very nice indeed.  Doesn't sound like the old 5150 amps at all to me which could be a good or bad thing depending on where you stand on the Peavey 5150's tone.

On the plus side, it does seem to really nail those early VH tones more than any other amp I've ever heard.  There must be something that Ed has been keeping secret all these years that he's sharing with Fender to get that tone (imo) - the old dawg!!!

This is definitely a good thing  5150s have a shiteload of gain, but lack severely in the tone department.

This does almost as good of a Van Halen tone as a Roccaforte High Gain 100, but that's meaningless to me... I want an amp that sounds like me! :)

It really does sound like the album 'Van Halen' the orginal earlier tone, except not quite as heavy. I'd love to hear what that tone sounds like with finger tapping, just to see how it compares with the original Van Halen tones. I admire the guy for trying to recreate the 'perfect' Van Halen tone, but it's not cool in terms of originality, where has it got him in life? that's what he needs to ask himself. lol

that's pretty sweet. did you ever hear the mojave clips on their website? they were pretty close too to the VH1 tone. EDIT; that was great playing too, which doubtless plays a part.

He's got his delay settings spot on as well, which are a crucial part of the sound on those early albums. It does sound very authentic indeed and it's a great quality recording.

If I was in the market for an early VH tone I think I'd probably go for a Mako though. IMO the Makoplex just bleeds VH tone (their clips are ok but could be better recorded though).

His Badger clip sounds really nice as well, a bit smoother and less fizzy. I'd probably go for that if I could afford either :P

Whoa - that's good!  How much mucking about did he have to do to get the tone though???
